The Lefebvrian Schism: Why Does the Church Continue to Extend a Hand to Those Who Reject It?

Father Davide Chito, an expert in Canon Law, analyzes the legal and pastoral aspects of the tense relationship between the Society of Saint Pius X and the Vatican, a conflict marked by liturgical nostalgia and a breakdown in unity

The Lefebvrian Schism: Why Does the Church Continue to Extend a Hand to Those Who Reject It?

The case of the Society of Saint Pius X—commonly known as the Lefebvrists—has returned to the forefront following the recent decisions of Pope Leo XIV. What many perceive as a “heavy hand” from the Vatican is, for experts, the chronicle of a schism caused by those who, in the name of tradition, have ultimately placed themselves outside of ecclesial communion.

To understand what is really happening, we spoke with  Father Davide Chito , professor of Canon Criminal Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, who clears up the doubts that often cloud this debate in public opinion.

The crux of the matter: Tradition or rejection of the Church?

The central point of contention is not, as is often believed, simply an attachment to the Latin Mass or to the traditional liturgy. The problem is much deeper:  the explicit rejection of the Second Vatican Council .

“It’s not that the Church has no place for traditional sensibilities,” explains Fr. Chito. “The problem arises when the Society maintains that, since the Council, the Church has strayed from its path and that they have a duty to ‘save’ it. By arrogating this authority to themselves, they place themselves above the Magisterium, which is the very definition of a schismatic act.”

Between legal sanction and pastoral wound

Many faithful wonder why the Vatican has reacted so severely to episcopal ordinations without papal mandate, while other issues—such as the German episcopate or the situation in China—generate different debates. The expert is clear: not all Church crises are the same.

  • The difference with China:  In cases like China, the Church has sought agreements, albeit imperfect, as a “lesser evil” to avoid a massive schism and protect the faithful.
  • The situation of the Fraternity:  In the case of the Lefebvrists, Fr. Chito emphasizes that there is no real need that justifies breaking the unity, but an attitude of constant doctrinal resistance that has made legal intervention inevitable.

The Pope’s outstretched hand

Despite the gravity of the situation, the tone of Pope Leo XIV’s recent letter is not threatening, but rather  paternally invoking . The Vatican is not seeking to “expel” anyone, but rather to make the members of the Fraternity aware that tearing the tunic of Christ is a grave sin.

“The Church always has its hands outstretched,” Chito affirms. “The Holy Father’s desire is unity, but this unity is not an external construct; it is the fruit of an inner conversion. The Church does not stop to say, ‘You are out,’ but tirelessly seeks ways to win back her children, valuing all the good they can contribute, provided they accept walking in communion with the successor of Peter.”

In conclusion, the conflict is not a matter of liturgical preferences, but of humility. As the expert reminds us, in the life of the Church, as in that of any family, misunderstandings can occur, but the limit is unity: without it, tradition risks becoming an isolated island instead of the heart that pumps life to the entire ecclesial body.
