The Holy See confirms the Pope’s apostolic journey to Spain
June 6-12, 2026
The Holy See has confirmed today that Pope Leo XIV will make an apostolic journey to Spain from June 6 to 12, 2026. The Secretariat of State made the confirmation public following an invitation from the Church in Spain and His Majesty King Felipe VI.
This confirmation fulfills a long-held desire of the Church in Spain and marks the beginning of the preparatory work, the next milestone of which will be the formation of the Holy Father’s agenda, which is already underway and for which the Archdiocese of Madrid, the Archdiocese of Barcelona, and the Dioceses of the Canary Islands and Tenerife have been proposed as venues.
The trip to Spain is part of a broader series of international visits planned for 2026, reflecting the distinctly missionary and pastoral character of the Pontificate. Before arriving in Spain, the Pope will visit the Principality of Monaco on March 28 and then undertake an apostolic journey to several African countries from April 13 to 23, including stops in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
Pope Francis will visit Spain: the capital, Madrid, and then Barcelona, to inaugurate the new and taller tower of the Sagrada Familia, the monumental basilica that has reshaped the Catalan city’s skyline. The visit coincides with the centenary of the death of the brilliant architect who “dreamed” of the basilica and began its construction, Antoni Gaudí, declared Venerable Servant of God last year. While remaining in Spain, the Pope will travel from Barcelona to the Canary Islands, a trip that was already close to Francis’s heart, as Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid José Cobo Cano emphasized last January. The trip will consist of two stops: Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
You can follow the information on the official website of the visit in Spain.
