The heartbeat of the eternal: why true love is not a fleeting fire
In the foreword to the new edition of *YOUCAT Love Forever*, Pope Leo XIV encourages young people to discover the vocation to marriage as a firm commitment and a decision that transcends fleeting emotions
The human heart innately yearns for a deep, passionate, and lasting love; a desire that, far from being accidental, reflects the fact that human beings were created to love. Pope Leo XIV emphasizes this in the prologue to the new edition of the book YOUCAT Love Forever (published by the foundation of the official Catechism for Young People), a text designed to accompany new generations in their reflection on affection, relationships, and marriage from a Christian perspective.
In the document, the Pope points out that, although the initial spark between a man and a woman can ignite with the force and speed of an arrow piercing the heart, authentic love is not exhausted by that first impact nor reduced to a fleeting feeling that ignites and fades. On the contrary, the Pope defines true affection as a profound “yes” to the other person: a firm decision, a shared path, and a covenant intended for life.
The text also emphasizes that divine grace can be present in human relationships to transform them, granting the capacity to love through service, generous self-giving, and mutual forgiveness. When a husband and wife give themselves to each other completely and mutually, their fidelity and their daily struggle for good become a living reflection of Christ’s self-giving to his Church.
Faced with the questions and challenges that young people encounter on their path to commitment, Leo XIV extends a direct invitation to them not to fear the depth of this horizon: a call presented not as an impossible burden, but as a vocation strong enough to overcome difficulties and sustain their entire existence under the light of faith.
