The Gift of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives
Grandfather's Catechesis: How Confirmation Unites Us More Deeply to Jesus, Like a Family Bond That Can Never Be Broken
Ah, dear children, sit here with me by the fire, as if we were having a story time at Grandfather’s house. I am an old man who has lived many springs, and today I want to tell you something that illuminated my path: the sacrament of Confirmation. It is as if the Holy Spirit comes to strengthen that seed of faith we planted at Baptism, making it grow strong and deep. It is a moment when God invites us to seek Him more earnestly, to find Him in the corners of daily life, and to love Him as an inseparable friend.
Remember, young friends, that life is a great adventure in search of Jesus. When I was young, like you now, I got lost in games, chasing butterflies in the fields, or in the worries of school. But Confirmation was like a light that guided me. The Holy Spirit gives us that special strength to see Jesus not only in the pages of a holy book, but in the embrace of a friend, in helping someone in need, in the silence of prayer at sunset. It is so beautiful to think about how this sacrament makes us part of a larger family, the Church, where we all walk together toward Him.
In those days after receiving Confirmation, I began to notice changes. I felt braver to speak about my faith, to pray without shame in front of others. It was as if Jesus were saying to me, “Come, look for me in the small things and you will find me in the great.” And so it was: in the Masses, in the Bible readings, in good deeds. This sacrament perfects us, makes us mature in faith, unites us more closely to Christ, and prepares us to be witnesses of his love in the world. It is a seal that God places on our souls, saying, “You are mine, and I help you to love me more each day.”
But it’s not just a ceremony; it’s a lifelong commitment. I, with my wrinkles and my memories, tell you that seeking Jesus through Confirmation will bring you a joy that never ends. In difficult times, like when I lost loved ones or faced illness, the Spirit comforted me, making me feel that Jesus was by my side, walking with me. It’s heartwarming how God treats us like beloved children, equipping us for the journey. And how wonderful it is to know that this love is for everyone, without exception.
Now, dear children, let’s finish with some advice from this grandfather who loves you dearly: Prepare your hearts with daily prayer, even if it’s short, to seek Jesus before the sacrament. Choose a godparent who is an example of living faith, someone with whom you can talk about your doubts and joys. Attend catechism classes with enthusiasm, not as a chore, but as a treasure hunt. After Confirmation, continue seeking Jesus in the Eucharist every Sunday, in service to others, and in reading the Word of God. Remember, the Spirit will give you strength to love Him more; don’t let Him fade. Live with positivity, and you will see how He transforms your life into a beautiful story.
