The Four Great Protagonists of Advent
Figures who teach us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ
Advent is a journey of waiting, preparation, and hope that leads us toward Christmas. During these weeks, the Church presents us with four key figures who help us live this season with spiritual depth and with hearts ready to welcome Jesus. Each embodies an essential attitude for preparing ourselves for the coming of the Lord
Isaiah: Learning to wait with hope
The prophet Isaiah is the great figure of waiting. He is the one who most forcefully and urgently announces the arrival of the Messiah, awakening in the people the desire for salvation. Isaiah invites us to be filled with hope and to recognize our need to be saved. He reminds us that we all, in one way or another, need liberation: from sin, from vices, from pride, or from resentment. His message remains relevant today because it encourages us to wait for Jesus with an open and trusting heart.
Saint John the Baptist: preparing the way of the Lord
Saint John the Baptist represents preparation. He is the bridge between the expectation of the Old Testament and the fulfillment of the New, the one who clearly points to the Messiah already present. His mission is to prepare the way for the Lord and teach us to focus our gaze solely on Christ. His great lesson for Advent is profound and demanding: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John invites us to die to our ego and our pride so that Christ may grow and live fully within us.
Saint Joseph: the silence that guards God
Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, is a model of simple and authentic happiness. In the eyes of the world, he was a simple carpenter, but he possessed the greatest treasure: Jesus and Mary. His life teaches us that true happiness lies in humility, in enjoying the everyday, and in fulfilling God’s will. Saint Joseph is a master of the interior life, of silence, and of recollection. In Advent, his figure invites us to cherish God in our hearts with discretion, fidelity, and love.
The Virgin Mary: the heart that awaits Christ
Mary is the woman of hope and the perfect model for living Advent. Her Immaculate Heart teaches us to listen to God and to respond generously and promptly to His will. The image of Mary pregnant, absorbed in prayer, contemplating the mystery of God made flesh in her womb, encapsulates the spirit of this liturgical season. She accompanies us and helps us prepare our hearts so that Jesus may be born and grow within us.
One of the Advent prefaces admirably summarizes this mystery:
“Christ, our Lord, whom all the prophets announced; the Virgin awaited with ineffable maternal love; John proclaimed him already near and pointed him out later among men.”
In this Advent season, let us be accompanied by these four intercessors who guide us as we await the Son of God. May their example help us to live this time with faith, hope, and love.
And don’t forget: God loves you and wants you to be happy.
