The Antidote to Silence in a Fast-Moving World: Leo XIV’s Message to the Augustinians
In a moving encounter in Madrid, the Pope emphasized the value of "entering into one's own heart" and proposed community unity as the true guiding light for young people on a spiritual quest
On the afternoon of Sunday, June 7, the agenda for the first leg of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic journey through Spain included a stop that was as discreet in its form as it was profound in its significance. Before traveling to the Movistar Arena to meet with representatives from the cultural, economic, and sporting sectors, the Pontiff held a private meeting in Madrid with some 220 Augustinian friars from various communities and members of the Augustinian family.
Far from the media spotlight, the Pope’s words pointed directly to the essence of consecrated life and, at the same time, to one of the great shortcomings of contemporary society.

A beacon for six hundred thousand young people
After receiving greetings from the provincial superior, Leo XIV addressed the gathering to express his gratitude. In his speech, the Holy Father immediately connected the reality of the Augustinian order with the events of the previous day. He recalled the massive prayer vigil that, on Saturday night, brought together 600,000 young people in Lima Square.
For the Pope, the communion and “unity of heart” that define the Augustinian charism are not abstract or merely internal concepts, but a living and urgent message that must be shared with those new generations who today openly express their doubts and their spiritual search.

Defend inner silence
One of the most significant moments of the meeting occurred when the Pope turned his gaze toward the contemplative nuns present in the room. Leo XIV wished to explicitly highlight the value of the cloistered vocation in the 21st century.
In a perceptive diagnosis of the pace of modern life, the Pope warned that humanity is going through a time when “silence and the capacity of human beings to enter into their own hearts are being lost.” Faced with this drift, the contemplative life is not isolation, but rather the pillar that gives true meaning and impetus to the Church’s social action.
The meeting, marked by its warmth and closeness, concluded with the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer and the papal blessing, before Leo XIV took the time to greet each of the attendees individually. With this encounter, the Pope concludes an intense weekend in the Spanish capital, which included the Corpus Christi celebration in the Plaza de Cibeles, before continuing his itinerary—which includes institutional meetings in Parliament and visits to Barcelona and the Canary Islands—on this apostolic journey that will last until June 12.
