Temperance: Balance in the Midst of the Whirlwind
Do you find it hard to stop? Do you feel like work is absorbing you? Temperance is your lifeline
We live in a work culture that often applauds excess: more hours, more tasks, more connection, more achievements. And without realizing it, we end up exhausted, saturated, and often disconnected from what matters most. In this context, temperance appears as a countercultural virtue, but an incredibly necessary one. Being temperate doesn’t mean being mediocre or unambitious, but rather knowing how to find the balance between effort and rest, between passion for what you do and the serenity to avoid getting lost in the whirlwind. It means having the ability to set healthy boundaries to take care of your mind, your body… and your soul.
Temperance manifests itself in small, everyday gestures: knowing how to disconnect from email at the end of the day, learning to say “no” to overwhelming things, choosing silence over impulsive reactions, regulating your emotions so they don’t overpower you in the midst of stress. A temperate worker is someone who knows themselves, who doesn’t let themselves be swept away by extremes, and who manages their energies wisely. It’s not about curbing the desire to do things well, but rather about organizing that desire so it doesn’t consume you or rob you of what’s essential: your inner peace and your deepest sense of purpose in life.
From the Christian faith, temperance is a concrete form of freedom. It helps us not to be slaves to our emotions, external expectations, or misunderstood productivity. It reminds us that we are more than what we produce. Jesus himself retreated to pray, rested with his disciples, and withdrew from crowds when necessary. If the Son of God knew how to stop, why can’t we? Practicing temperance is an act of humility: accepting that we have limits and that it’s okay to respect them.
Furthermore, this virtue protects your work relationships. When you’re balanced, you treat others better, you know how to listen, you don’t react with anger or impatience, and you can better discern your decisions. A temperate leader is fairer, more humane, and more relatable. A team where temperance is valued is a team that breathes, cares for one another, and works in harmony. Because balance isn’t the enemy of performance: it’s its greatest ally.
So today, in the midst of your tasks, stop for a moment and ask yourself: Am I at peace or on autopilot? Am I respecting my own rhythms and those of others? Am I working from a place of serenity or anxiety? Cultivating temperance will allow you not only to perform better, but also to live better. And that, in a fast-paced world, is almost a miracle… or rather, a virtue.
