Sexuality as a language of love
The body speaks what the heart feels
“The body, by expressing itself, manifests the truth of love” (Saint John Paul II, General Audience, 1980).
In previous articles, we have explored:
-
- The gift of the Theology of the Body, which offered the global vision of this catechesis as a gift to the Church and the world.
- The wound of sin and the redemption of the body, which showed the need for Christ to restore that original gaze.
- Marriage as a primordial sacrament, where the body is revealed as a language of communion.
- Consecrated virginity and celibacy for the Kingdom, eschatological signs of total surrender to God.
- The resurrection of the flesh, hope that gives meaning to life and glorifies the body.
- The language of the body in the liturgy, where the Eucharist is the culmination of the nuptial love of Christ and the Church.
- The purity of the heart, which allows us to see God in the body with renewed eyes.
- Human love as an image of the Trinity, a reflection of the divine mystery in man and woman.
- The vocation to the gift of oneself, the key to the Theology of the Body.
Biblical and theological foundation
Sexuality was created by God as a language of love : “Male and female he created them… and blessed them” (Gen 1:27-28). Every sexual act has a spousal meaning: it communicates devotion, fidelity, and openness to life.
Saint Paul reminds us: “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price; glorify God in your body” (1 Cor 6:19-20).
Communication of body and soul
The body doesn’t just act; it speaks the truth about the person. Selfish sexuality reduces the other to an object; authentic sexuality communicates total and fruitful love, integrating desire and self-giving.
Saint John Paul II states:
“The conjugal act is body language that expresses the surrender of the whole person, soul and body” (General Audience, December 2, 1982).
Difference between selfish use and authentic surrender
-
Selfish use: turns the other into a means for pleasure or convenience.
-
Authentic surrender: recognizes the other as a person, open to the gift of life and love.
Sexuality, thus, educates the heart and prepares for full communion in true love.
Implications for Christian life
-
Sexuality is a sacrament of love and total gift.
-
It guides men and women toward openness to life and the gift of self.
-
It teaches emotional and moral integrity, showing that true love is always generous.
Sexuality is the language of authentic love, revealing the truth of the body and the person. Only by integrating it into total surrender and communion is the fullness of human love achieved according to God’s plan.
