Sell everything you own and buy the field: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, July 26, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, July 26, 2026, entitled, “Sell everything you have and buy the field.”
***
After hearing the parables of the Sower, the Mustard Seed, and the Wheat and the Weeds on previous Sundays, today the Lord invites us to conversion . To ask ourselves what we have done with the seed He has sown in our hearts.
It invites us to consider whether our heart is the good soil in which the seed germinates and grows, or whether, on the contrary, the seed has been spoiled because it has been choked by thorns or weeds…
How do we know? The parable of the hidden treasure gives us the key. Look at what the “treasure” of your life is…! Who is the Lord of your life? Where is the center of your life? What do you value most in your life? Where is your treasure? What or who is your treasure? Can you understand your life today without Jesus Christ?
Jesus told us that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. What are you striving for in life? Is it for your money, your job, your studies, your career, your prestige, your beauty…? Where is your heart? What are you focusing your efforts on?
This is the first and foremost of all the signs: when one has truly encountered Jesus Christ, one has found the love of one’s life; one’s life changes completely. So completely that one doesn’t want to lose what one has found because one knows that one has found a treasure. A treasure that, moreover, is not sold in stores. A treasure that cannot be bought with money or effort.
What do you ask the Lord for each day in your prayer? Do you follow Solomon’s example? Solomon wasn’t seduced by money, the ambition for power, a long life, or the elimination of his enemies. Solomon asked for wisdom to discern between good and evil and to govern his people wisely. He considered the wisdom that comes from God to be paramount.
As we allow the seed to grow, we grow in experiencing the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Word also tells us several signs that the seed of faith is growing :
For those who love God, everything works together for good. Faith gives you new eyes that allow you to see that your life is a story of love and salvation that God is creating within you. The Spirit grants you the gift of wisdom and knowledge .
I value the precepts of your mouth more than thousands of pieces of gold and silver… my delight will be your will… I detest the way of lies…. Faith allows you to rest in God’s will and trust that His Word is a word of life, of eternal life, of life in its fullness. The Spirit grants you the ability to enjoy the gifts of understanding and piety .
A scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven is like a head of household who brings out of the storehouse both new and old : your life is illuminated by the Holy Spirit. Each day you receive a word of love from the Lord in the midst of your story, giving it meaning and flavor. The Spirit gives you the gift of counsel .
You take your life seriously. The Spirit gives you the gift of fear of God , which is the beginning of wisdom.
Take heart! What is the “treasure” of your life? How are you living your faith? Ask the Lord for the gift of the Holy Spirit, that He may fill you with love for Jesus Christ so that He may be the Lord of your life. If you trust Him and open your heart to Him, He will give you the gift of fortitude : He will empower you to live a new life, life in the Spirit, and He will gradually reproduce the image of Jesus Christ in your heart.
Come Holy Spirit! (cf. Lk 11:13).
