Every June 29, the Church joyfully celebrates the solemnity of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, fundamental pillars of the Christian faith and privileged witnesses of Christ's love

Saints Peter and Paul: Two pillars of the Church, one mission

Every year, on June 29, we celebrate with joy and devotion the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, two essential figures in the history of the Church. This solemnity is not only a liturgical memorial, but a living testimony of how God chooses and sends those who confess his name and dedicate their lives to the Gospel.

Peter, Christ’s first vicar, is called by Jesus by his original name, Simon, when he confesses with faith: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” This declaration was not the fruit of human reasoning, but a direct revelation from the Father. Jesus then calls him “Peter,” that is, “rock,” and upon this rock promises to build his Church, assuring him that the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

Episodes such as the race to the tomb, in which John gives way to Peter, show that from the earliest days of the Church, Peter was recognized as a spiritual authority, despite his falls and denials. His role as a rock remains essential.

Paul, for his part, underwent a radical conversion. From persecutor of Christians, he became an “apostle to the Gentiles.” On the road to Damascus, Jesus himself appeared to him and said: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Thus, the Lord fully identified himself with his Church. Paul, blinded by divine light, was baptized and sent to preach to all nations. Although he was not one of the Twelve, he was called directly by Christ and became one of the greatest evangelizers.

Peter dedicated himself primarily to the Jews; Paul, to the Gentile peoples. Both died in Rome, during the persecution of Nero, and the basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul were built in their honor. There is no doubt that their lives and deaths left a profound mark that still sustains the Church today.

What do we celebrate on June 29? That Jesus chose a man and said to him, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church… to you, I give the keys of the Kingdom.” That Jesus appeared to another man and said, “I am Jesus, whom you persecute… I am sending you as a light to the nations.”

That’s why this is a great feast. Saints Peter and Paul are models of faith, courage, and dedication. Let us celebrate this day with all our hearts, follow their example, and do all the good we can.
