Saint Angela of the Cross, November 5
Always at the service of those most in need
Today, November 5th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Angela of the Cross. On this day, we especially remember a woman from Seville who dedicated her life to God through the poorest of her time, leaving a lasting legacy: the Sisters of the Cross.
Saint Angela, born on January 30, 1846, next to the old church of Saint Lucy in the San Julián neighborhood, is a symbol of devotion and service. Her dedication to the needy earned her the recognition of the Church, and her spirit of charity lives on through the work of the Sisters of the Cross, who continue her mission in Seville and beyond.
This date is especially significant for Seville, as on November 5, 1982, Pope John Paul II visited the city for the first time and beatified Sister Angela in a massive ceremony at the fairgrounds. This event marked a milestone in the city’s history and in the veneration of Saint Angela.
Furthermore, from November 3rd to December 20th, the image of Saint Angela of the Cross is on display in the Main Sacristy of Seville Cathedral. This is part of the exhibition Sedes Hispalensis: Fons Pietatis, “Seville Cathedral, Source of Piety,” organized by the Metropolitan Chapter on the occasion of the Second International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for the faithful and visitors to appreciate the spiritual legacy of Saint Angela within the context of Sevillian popular piety.
On this day of celebration, we reflect on the life of Saint Angela of the Cross and her example of love and service to the most needy. Her legacy invites us to renew our commitment to Christian values and to follow her path of dedication and generosity.
