Rosalía and the Emptiness of the Soul: God and Trust in Life
The singer shares her experiences of existential emptiness and how to find strength in the face of the fear of failure
Rosalía was recently interviewed by Vallverdú and shared reflections that have resonated deeply with many. One of the central themes was the feeling of emptiness that many of us experience when we don’t have God in our lives. The singer confessed:
“I’ve had this feeling of emptiness my whole life, and sometimes you mistake it for something material, an experience, a mess you get into, or even romantic relationships where you put your partner on a pedestal.”
Rosalía wondered if this emptiness could actually be a space meant for God, and she suggested that only He can fill it. This feeling is something many people recognize: an infinite thirst for love and happiness that only something infinite—God’s love—can satisfy.
The interviewer also emphasized that it is often in the most difficult moments, on the verge of existential emptiness, that people draw closer to God. As Saint Augustine said:
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
In addition to discussing spiritual emptiness, Rosalía offered a reflection on trust in life. She explained that there are two ways to have confidence: one based on the belief that you will succeed, and the other on not fearing failure. The singer affirms that she herself creates music without fear of failure, a particularly valuable lesson in a society where many young people are paralyzed by intolerance and the fear of failing.
This perspective connects with the story of Jesus, who, despite facing poverty, marginalization, and death on the cross, transformed apparent failure into the greatest success: resurrection. This example shows that it is always possible to rise and overcome any setback.
Ultimately, Rosalía’s interview reminds us that there is someone who can fill the void in our hearts and who loves us deeply: Jesus. As the final message of her reflection says: God loves you and desires your happiness.
