Rediscovering Family and Work

Balancing home life, personal bonds, and daily work enhances our personal development and happiness

Rediscovering Family and Work

Have you ever stopped to think that personal greatness requires the greatness of the family? It’s the place where each person finds roots that nourish and sustain them, and wings to soar high…

It is wonderful to perceive the immense and indispensable value of one’s own family:  where each person is nurtured in an atmosphere of love and freedom. This is true not only when a child is born and so in need of care, but also as they develop and grow in their humanity—and therefore, their capacity to love. Then they need their family even more to love, to give of themselves, to develop as a person, to their own level, and to be more fulfilled. And this fulfillment brings joy and happiness.

Within a family, everyone has  the freedom to love those close to them.  To open their hearts to the warmth of affection and enjoy those cherished relationships, despite life’s difficulties and sorrows.

To achieve this, it’s essential to create  a positive home environment , one that offers light and warmth in all circumstances. The  joy and affection  that surround the family, stemming from their willingness to  make life pleasant for everyone, especially the couple, effectively spills over to the children, who need genuine love. This doesn’t mean we should suppress their potential, but rather help them discover and develop it within the embrace of our mutual affection. It is in this environment that they learn everything and feel protected and loved.

Therefore, creating a positive atmosphere, with a gentle, kind, and cheerful tone  , and a sense of humor, is key to  seeing the good in others, even in difficult or adverse circumstances. This is essential to prevent everyday problems and challenges from becoming discouraging, to give them their true value, or to put them into perspective. Together, we can better resolve problems and cope with tough times. This kind of environment  fosters  harmonious relationships, where we learn to genuinely care for others. In this way, it becomes easier to strive to be our best selves, always keeping those around us in mind.

Likewise, nurturing relationships and learning to communicate , first and foremost with your partner, is essential. Sharing your feelings, desires, needs, and joys with your loved one is like opening your heart and pouring out its contents into the other person, who then embraces you with all their richness and vitality because they love you. And children learn everything this way, as they observe us constantly.

Home is the intimate space where true human relationships are born and nurtured, where affectionate bonds are formed that strengthen relationships. It is where we learn to experience understanding , empathy, and emotional intelligence in their truest sense, and where we create cherished and precious memories steeped in love… memories that will stay with us for a lifetime.

We need relationships with others to build ourselves as people. “I become myself thanks to you,” Martin Buber points out. And this is the specific environment for that.

Each person grows nourished by beauty, truth, and goodness ,  all contained within love. Plato  already pointed out that to educate is to bring forth the beauty within each person, just as to love is to give birth in beauty. In this way, we achieve the best in ourselves, always keeping others in mind. The family is the natural environment for developing all that inherent wonder within each person, with dreams and longings for infinity and eternity.

On the other hand, each person is, and creates, a family.  They need to give themselves to others to be themselves. They are relational beings, an intimacy open to others. Therefore, it’s important to put enthusiasm into and  think of small details each day that demonstrate and refine affection ,  starting with your partner. Make your loved one feel truly valued, admired, understood, and loved. Also, be grateful  for any small gesture, attention, or kindness. Even for their very existence… Know how to smile, inspire hope, love, fight, forgive… and enjoy life with your loved one. Place them at the center of your heart . Seek their well-being first, for that is precisely what love is, and thus ensure their happiness. This will stimulate feelings of affection and the reciprocity of love.

And work … that dignifies and fulfills us as people. Any work that carries responsibility, like managing and organizing our own family life. Going to the office, to the shop, or to the hospital… And we can always do new things with good cheer and a positive attitude, for the good of our loved ones. It’s what gives us enthusiasm and the ability to take on challenges, and return to that haven of peace and freedom we build each day at home… It’s what allows us to become and reinvent ourselves as people day after day. To feel loved, to gather strength, and to go out again, improving other environments… Until we achieve synergy between what we learn or achieve in one and in another.

Since the dawn of humanity, family and work have been closely intertwined. Human beings need family to develop as individuals, requiring the loving and supportive environment that surrounds them. And, on the other hand, they need to work for their families, as it’s a way to provide for them by contributing to their well-being. Work also involves personal growth, developing their skills and abilities, fostering creativity, and cultivating habits and virtues that shape character and personality .

As the great humanist Tomás Melendo points out, “ If to love is to desire the good of another person,  then to work is to produce real goods for them. Therefore, to work in this way is to love twice over .” In the words of Nicolás Grimaldi, “ Work is the unknown of love. ”

Well-focused work is done for the people we love and for whom it is intended. This perspective  enriches the individual , allowing them to grow and mature. It is a form of service to others. However, if the only goal is to stand out, achieve success at any cost, feed one’s ego, or seek only financial reward, it leads to frustration because these things  don’t truly fulfill us . We are too great for such narrow perspectives. Therefore, it is essential to rediscover the true meaning of daily work in service to our loved ones, uncovering our own mission and talents .

And learning to value housework , essential for the development of family dynamics and harmonious coexistence.  We all participate in it , contributing and leaving our personal mark, developing our talents and abilities, imagination and creativity… All of this is inscribed in our biology, even in our genes, which encourage cooperation with others and enhance creativity.

In that environment, the table  becomes “the piece of furniture of communication”: one learns what is important in life, how to dialogue, how to communicate and share affections, how to think of others, how to add loving details, how to finish tasks well, how to help those who need it, with elegance, without it being noticeable… As well as teamwork , understanding and empathy.

Ultimately, family is the “school of love,” where we learn to love in concrete ways , through actions that demonstrate it… even if it’s sometimes difficult or we don’t initially feel like it. It’s also where we cultivate imagination and creativity to put our hearts into so many everyday gestures and details, as Saint-Exupéry reminds us in The Little Prince: it is only with the heart that one can see rightly…

To value connection , to learn to look into each other’s eyes, to smile, to be mindful of feelings, to be available, to listen without rushing, to welcome, to forgive any misunderstanding… And the value  of sacrifice, which becomes a joy for those we love. The effort put into household chores becomes a joy that refines and transcends the here and now. All of this forms a frame of reference that is etched in each person’s heart.

Hence the importance of spending time together, without screens or distractions, enjoying leisurely meals and conversations where everyone has a wonderful time and feels truly loved. Focusing on the good in others, with unwavering optimism, learning to brighten their day with a small gesture, a service, or by taking care of something that’s been on their mind. Think, feel, and take action… This is how we find happiness by bringing joy to our loved ones.
