Preparing for the Encounter with the Spirit
Grandfather's Catechesis: Advice from a Grandfather on Opening Your Heart to Jesus Before Confirmation, Like Preparing a Garden for Spring
Come closer, dear children, to this old armchair where so many stories have unfolded. Today I speak to you about how to prepare for Confirmation, that sweet encounter with the Holy Spirit that strengthens our faith. It is a special time to seek Jesus with an open heart, to find Him in catechesis, and to love Him in the community of the Church. Like a garden preparing to bloom, we must cleanse and nourish our souls.
During my preparation, I attended classes where I learned about the mysteries of the faith, the sacraments, and the life of Jesus. It wasn’t just memorization; it was discovering a treasure. I tell you, young people, that this period is crucial: it involves formation, prayer, and choosing a sponsor who will be a faithful guide. Go to confession to receive the sacrament in a state of pure grace, freeing your soul from burdens. It is positive: it makes us feel light and ready for God’s love.
Remember how, in my youth, I involved my family: we prayed together, shared our doubts and joys. That strengthened my search for Jesus. In catechism classes, explore the Bible, ask the priest about anything you don’t understand. It’s a beautiful journey, full of discoveries, like finding pearls in the sea.
But the preparation goes further: serve in the parish, visit the sick, help at home. There you will find Jesus in others. I did it, and it filled me with profound joy. This time matures us, makes us aware of our mission as Christians.
Do not forget that it is a lifelong process; Confirmation is the beginning of a deeper friendship with Him.
In closing, here’s my grandfather’s advice: Attend all catechism classes with curiosity, like explorers. Choose a sponsor who lives their faith every day and talk to them about Jesus. Pray the rosary as a family to open your hearts. Go to confession regularly and serve those in need to find Christ. Seek Him in personal prayer, and you will want to love Him more. Make this a positive habit, and Confirmation will be a seed that grows into eternal love.
