Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru
Minister Teresa Mera highlights the economic and cultural impact of this historic event, promoting "The Leo Route" in various regions of the country
Peru has become a clear priority. The country’s Foreign Minister, Hugo de Zela, announced on February 1 that the Pope had accepted the official invitation from the transitional government led by President José Jerí to visit Peru in 2026. While the exact dates are still being discussed, both the government and the Peruvian Episcopal Conference agree on a date in the second half of the year, probably between October and November, once the electoral cycle following the general elections in April has concluded.
The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Teresa Mera, highlighted that the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Peru , scheduled for the last months of 2026, represents a unique strategic opportunity to consolidate the country as a global benchmark in religious tourism.
This announcement is based on statements by the president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Carlos García, who confirmed progress in organizing the papal visit. The minister emphasized the positive impact this event will have on the entire national tourism sector, from hotels to local businesses and employment in the regions.
“The Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), has been working proactively to ensure the country is ready to welcome the world. Religious tourism transcends faith and spirituality: it is also a cultural expression that boosts the economy, generates employment, and creates opportunities for the development of our regions,” stated Minister Teresa Mera.
Globally, religious tourism represents approximately 20% of international tourism, a constantly growing segment. In Peru, this niche combines a rich historical heritage, cultural identity, and the potential to generate a sustainable economic impact in various destinations.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) is actively promoting the “León Route” initiative , a multi-sectoral strategic project involving all three levels of government, the Catholic Church, tourism associations, and the private sector. This route integrates history, spirituality, and territorial identity, with an emphasis on enhancing the value of religious and cultural heritage, as well as improving infrastructure, tourism services, and public spaces.
The proposal primarily covers the regions of Lambayeque , Piura , La Libertad , and Callao , where 38 key tourist attractions are concentrated, including churches, sanctuaries, and cultural and natural sites. As part of these efforts, the permanent museum exhibit “Along the Paths of Leo XIV” was recently inaugurated in Chiclayo , enhancing the visitor experience and reinforcing local identity.
