Pope Leo XIV: Voice for Peace in Palestine and Loving Presence in Castel Gandolfo
In one day, the Pontiff combined international diplomacy and pastoral closeness to the elderly
On a day marked by gestures of profound humanity, Pope Leo XIV once again demonstrated his dual role as a spiritual leader and a diplomatic figure of global significance. On Monday, July 21, 2025, the Pontiff held a telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and, a few hours later, visited a nursing home in Castel Gandolfo, leaving behind a message of peace, comfort, and hope in both settings.
In the morning, the Pope spoke with the Palestinian leader about the critical humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalating violence in the West Bank. During the call, Leo XIV reiterated his firm defense of international humanitarian law, urging the protection of civilians, respect for places of worship, restraint in the use of force, and a prohibition on forced displacement. He also stressed the urgency of allowing humanitarian aid access to the most affected areas, especially the most vulnerable.
The conversation also had a symbolic significance, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine, signed in 2015, a milestone in diplomatic relations between the two entities.
Later, the Pope visited the Santa Marta residence in Castel Gandolfo, where he shared a special moment with the nuns and the elderly residents, ranging in age from 80 to 101. After a prayer in the chapel, he personally greeted each woman, listening to stories, sharing smiles, and offering his blessing. In a spontaneous moment, the Pontiff offered a brief reflection inspired by the day’s Gospel, encouraging the residents to live their faith with serenity, in an attitude of listening and prayer.
“You are a sign of hope,” he told them, highlighting the spiritual and testimonial value of old age and thanking them for the legacy of faith they continue to pass on.
Pope Leo XIV’s journey left a clear message: in the midst of global conflicts and personal challenges, the Church is present to accompany, console, and sow hope.
