Pope Francis to greet the faithful from Gemelli Hospital after weeks of hospitalization

After more than five weeks hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic, Pope Francis plans to make his first public appearance this Sunday, March 23. The 88-year-old Pontiff intends to appear from his hospital window to greet and bless the faithful at the end of the Angelus prayer.

Francis was admitted on February 14 due to bilateral pneumonia, which required intensive treatment with oxygen therapy and physical therapy. Although his health has progressively improved, the Vatican has not yet set a date for his discharge. During his convalescence, the Pope has continued some of his responsibilities, such as approving sainthood causes and issuing written messages for the Sunday Angelus.

The Holy Father’s reappearance will be a significant moment, as it will mark the first time in over a month that he has appeared in public. Although he is not expected to deliver a speech, his presence will be an encouraging gesture for the faithful and a sign of his recovery.

Argentine Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, a close friend of the Pope, has assured that Francis has no intention of resigning and remains committed to his mission. Although he still needs rehabilitation to fully recover his voice after prolonged use of oxygen therapy, his overall condition is positive.
