Pope Francis silently prays before St. Pius X in the heart of the Vatican
In a gesture of profound devotion, the Holy Father stopped by St. Peter's Basilica this Thursday to pray at the tomb of the canonized Pontiff, unannounced and with complete discretion
The morning of Thursday, April 10, witnessed a moment of spiritual recollection in St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis, without calling for cameras or formal events, personally approached the tomb of St. Pius X, one of his predecessors most remembered for his pastoral dedication and defense of the faith.
The Holy Father arrived on foot from Casa Santa Marta and remained in prayer before the incorrupt body of Pope Giuseppe Sarto, which rests in the Chapel of the Presentation of the Virgin, in the right aisle of the Basilica. This silent visit, not included in the official agenda, once again demonstrates the spiritual and personal dimension that the Pope brings to his ministry.
Saint Pius X, canonized in 1954, is a figure of great importance for the Church. Known for promoting frequent communion and for instigating a profound liturgical and doctrinal reform, his example continues to be a source of inspiration for many faithful. Like him, Pope Francis has repeatedly expressed his concern for a faith lived in an authentic, simple, and committed manner.
This spontaneous gesture by Pope Francis highlights his closeness to the saints and his constant desire to put God at the center, even amid his busy schedule. In times of preparation for the Jubilee of 2025, such acts help renew the spirit of prayer and pilgrimage to which the entire Church is called.
