Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum Expands One-Year Distance Learning in Spanish
Excellent theological training without leaving home: now also in Spanish and with a double major
The Regina Apostolorum Athenaeum in Rome, a Pontifical Athenaeum promoted by the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, announced that it is expanding the first-year program of the Bachelor of Theology to two specialties: Dogmatic Theology and Spiritual Theology, offering them complete distance learning and in Spanish. This opportunity is because the Faculty received approval from the Holy See to offer part of its program online.
The Bachelor of Theology is intended for priests, religious, seminarians, and lay people. Its objective is to achieve a personal theological synthesis in one’s specialization, acquire adequate preparation in one’s area of specialization, learn the scientific method of research, and prepare for teaching.
In the specialty of Dogmatic Theology, in addition to studying great doctors such as Saint Thomas, we place special emphasis on exploring the theological thought of J. Ratzinger as an example of dialogue between faith and culture. In the specialty of Spiritual Theology, we study the great masters of the spiritual life and emphasize the skills required to be a spiritual director, trainer, and director of spiritual retreats.
This initiative represents a significant step toward integrating new technologies into high-quality theological education and offers significant benefits for all students.
This new study program is designed specifically for students from the Americas, offering classes held during the morning in Latin America and concentrated on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, making it possible to study while also performing pastoral work. (Classes held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 PM to 7:45 PM local time in Rome.)
Furthermore, with this option, which has already been very successful in its first edition and is now being expanded, students will be able to enjoy the benefits of the program “without having to incur the costs associated with relocation for the first year of study.” “This represents a considerable financial savings and eliminates the economic barriers that could hinder access to higher education,” the Ateneo adds.
First-year courses will be taught entirely in Spanish by internationally renowned professors, ensuring in-depth understanding and high-level training in a fully distance learning program. The second year of the Bachelor’s degree must be taken in person in Rome and in Italian. Italian reinforcement classes are offered for theology students in the first year.
The program includes a personalized tutoring plan to support students, especially with a view to researching and writing their final dissertation for the degree.
“The new Bachelor’s program is awarded by a Pontifical Athenaeum. This ensures the validity and authenticity of students’ academic degrees, providing them with a valuable and internationally recognized education,” the institution stated.
The Regina Apostolorum Athenaeum recognizes that this program—which combines flexibility, academic quality, and convenience—represents an unprecedented opportunity for those who wish to deepen their understanding of theology without geographical or time constraints. The start date is Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
There is also the alternative option of enrolling for a biennial Diploma, completely remote and in Spanish, with the same schedule, in both Dogmatic Theology and Spiritual Theology.
