Opus Dei Denounces Media Manipulation in a Judicial Investigation in Argentina
The Prelature warns about the misuse of a legal case affecting its members in Argentina by the media, highlighting the lack of foundation in the accusations
In September 2020, an Argentine lawyer filed a lawsuit on behalf of a group of women who were members of Opus Dei, seeking pension contributions equivalent to those made under Social Security. From the outset, the Prelature attempted to address the requests, but the lawyer refused to provide specific information on each case.
The situation escalated rapidly when the complaint escalated into an accusation of “human trafficking,” without any conclusive evidence to support it. Currently, the prosecutor’s office has proposed investigating the last four regional vicars of Opus Dei in Argentina, including Mariano Fazio, the current auxiliary vicar. Furthermore, a request has been made that the Prelate also be summoned to testify, although the presiding judge has not yet issued any official subpoenas.
Opus Dei maintains that there is clear media manipulation of the judicial process, aimed at influencing public opinion and generating a negative impact that could affect the legal development of the case.
In response, the Opus Dei communications offices in Rome and Argentina stated along with a background document detailing the events and the response to the complaints.

Opus Dei denounces serious manipulation of a judicial investigation in Argentina for media purposes.
Press release of July 28, 2025.
In September 2020, an Argentine lawyer filed a claim for pension contributions (equivalent to Social Security contributions in Spain) from a group of women who were members of the Prelature. Although efforts were made from the outset to address their requests, the lawyer refused to provide specific information on each specific case. This claim escalated into a surprising, unfounded accusation of “human trafficking.”
The Argentine prosecutor’s office has proposed an investigation into the last four regional vicars of Opus Dei in Argentina, including the current auxiliary vicar of Opus Dei, Mariano Fazio. The lawyer now seeks to have the prosecutors also request the Prelate to testify. So far, the judge in charge of the case has not summoned anyone for questioning.
All of this constitutes a clear manipulation of judicial proceedings to generate a media and public opinion scandal that could negatively influence the legal process.
The Opus Dei communications offices in Rome and Argentina have published a statement and a background document with detailed explanations of the entire case, and how efforts have been made to assist those who have come forward with specific complaints.
