October, Month of the Holy Rosary
The word "Rosary" means "Crown of Roses." Each time we pray the Hail Mary, we offer the Blessed Virgin a beautiful rose, and a complete Rosary constitutes a crown of roses. Just as the rose is the queen of flowers, the Rosary is the rose of all devotions
Where did the Holy Rosary originate?
The Holy Church received the Rosary in its present form in 1214 in a miraculous way. This event originated with the apparition of Our Lady to Saint Dominic , where she gave him the rosary as a powerful tool for conversion. The Saint recounted that he saw the Virgin holding a rosary in her hand and that she taught him how to pray it; she told him to preach it throughout the world, promising him that many sinners would be converted and receive abundant graces.
Since then, devotion to her has spread rapidly with incredible and miraculous results.
To exalt the Mother of God
Among the various ways to honor the Mother of God, choosing those that are best in themselves and most pleasing to Her, the recitation of the Holy Rosary holds a prominent place. It is worth remembering that among the many apparitions of the Blessed Virgin, She has always insisted on the recitation of the Rosary. For example, on May 13, 1917, in a village in Portugal called Cova da Iria, the Blessed Virgin vehemently urged the three shepherd children to pray the Rosary, in one of Her many apparitions to these three visionaries.
As a sacramental, the Holy Rosary contains the principal mysteries of our Catholic faith, nourishing and sustaining our faith, elevating our minds to divinely revealed truths, inviting us to the conquest of our eternal homeland, increasing the piety of the faithful, and promoting and strengthening virtues. The Rosary is high in dignity and efficacy; it could be said to be the easiest prayer for the simple and humble of heart, the most special prayer we offer to our Mother so that she may intercede for us before the throne of God.
The Holy Rosary extends the liturgical life of the Church but does not replace it; on the contrary, it enriches and invigorates the liturgy. For this reason, the Holy Rosary is considered a prayer within popular piety, containing a great treasure of values that respond with Christian wisdom to the great questions of existence.
The Rosary is also part of “today”
The passage of time, modern customs, and the innovation of forms of prayer cannot diminish the importance of praying the Holy Rosary. Indeed, the Church Fathers and Saints have had a profound devotion to this sacramental, and we, as Catholics and as lovers of the Queen of Heaven, must be fervent devotees of the Rosary.
It is worth remembering that the family that prays together stays together, that the devout and conscious recitation of the Holy Rosary brings peace to our souls and unites us more closely to Mary to live our Christianity authentically.
John Paul II: “My favorite prayer is the Rosary”
Pope John Paul II stated on numerous occasions, “My favorite prayer is the Rosary,” and he highly recommended this beautiful devotional practice. The following are some of his words:
- “The Rosary is a ladder to climb to heaven.”
- “The Rosary provides us with two wings to rise in the spiritual life: mental prayer and vocal prayer.”
- “It is the simplest prayer to the Virgin, but the one most full of biblical content.”
- When he went on pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, John Paul II gave a beautiful sermon about the Rosary. In it he said: “The Rosary is our favorite prayer. When we pray it, the Blessed Virgin is praying with us. In the Rosary we do what Mary did, we meditate in our hearts on the mysteries of Christ” (Lk 2:19).
