METANOIA: The Encounter with the Master
A play that narrates the spiritual transformation of a man broken by worldly passions, inspired by true events and benefiting Hogar Nazaret (Nazareth Home)
At the Fernández Baldor Theater, on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., “METANOIA” will premiere, a unique production that intertwines the art of bullfighting with a profound experience of Christian faith. Based on true events, the play, starring Rafael Barrio, explores the inner journey of a man polarized by dreams and earthly passions, until an irruption of divine Grace shakes the foundations of his existence. Through metaphors of bullfighting, the encounter between a “broken” human being and Jesus Christ is depicted, poetically inverted: here, it is the bullfighter—a symbol of power, beauty, and truth—who captivates the meek and elusive bull, representing the soul that evades spiritual reality.
The synopsis divides the narrative into three impactful acts. In Act 1: Genesis. Sin , the protagonist, in a state of agony, dreams of his soul (embodied in a bull) trapped between two opposing worlds: divine grace and sin. The man who sets himself up as the god of his own life sees how life and death compete for his very essence.
Act 2: Hell. Damnation delves deeper into the abyss, allowing the character to visit hell and experience the emptiness of a soul separated from God. Inspired by meditations of the Jesuit priest Fr. Rodrigo Molina, the text evokes utter desolation, suddenly interrupted by the cry of a Child—a symbol of the Incarnation of the Word—which hints at a hope of redemption.
Finally, Act 3: The Struggle of Redemption culminates in the transformative encounter with the “Master and his band.” Through reflection, prayer, and the Sacraments, the protagonist experiences divine mercy, recovering his identity as a child of God. This struggle is unconventional: it reverses roles to illustrate how divine truth conquers the wandering soul.
Rafael Barrio not only acts, but relives the most significant story of his life, inviting the audience to reflect on their own inevitable “encounter” with the divine. The performance, which promises to be a personal experience for each spectator, is presented as a special benefit for Hogar Nazaret, an organization dedicated to social support.
