Meeting between Pope Leo XIV and President Zelensky in Castel Gandolfo
A dialogue for peace
In a cordial and open atmosphere, Pope Leo XIV received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this Wednesday at the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since the pontiff’s election last March.
During the private audience, which lasted nearly an hour, Leo XIV and Zelensky discussed the painful situation facing Ukraine due to the war, as well as humanitarian initiatives and international efforts to pave the way for peace. The Ukrainian president expressed his gratitude for the Holy See’s continued support and commitment to seeking peaceful solutions to the conflict.
Although specific details of the topics discussed have not been released, Vatican sources emphasize the atmosphere of respect and mutual listening that characterized the dialogue. The audience concluded with the traditional exchange of gifts: Zelensky presented the Pope with a cross made from the remains of buildings destroyed by bombing, while Leo XIV presented the Ukrainian leader with a medal commemorating his pontificate and several documents on peace and care for creation.
After the meeting, President Zelensky greeted some of the Pope’s collaborators and those present at the papal residence. The visit takes place in an international context marked by mediation efforts and concern for the victims of the conflict.
This meeting confirms the Vatican’s willingness to keep diplomatic channels open with all parties involved, supporting dialogue as the preferred means of resolving conflicts.
