Leo XIV on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul: “Let the weapons fall silent, let dialogue begin”
The Pope presided over Mass in Saint Peter's with the imposition of the pallium on new archbishops and, in the Angelus, called for courage for peace in a world wounded by war
On a day marked by faith, unity, and commitment to peace, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, pillars of the universal Church, on June 29. From St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pontiff celebrated Mass with the participation of the new metropolitan archbishops, upon whom he bestowed the pallium as a sign of communion with the Apostolic See.
During his homily, Leo XIV highlighted the pastoral mission that stems from the example of the apostles, especially in times of challenge and persecution. “Peter and Paul were different, but they were united by faith and love for Christ. This unity in diversity is more urgent today than ever for our Church and for the world,” the Pope affirmed. The pallium, he added, is a symbol that reminds pastors that they are called to serve the people of God with humility and courage.

The Holy Father also wished to underline the importance of communion among the Churches, referring with gratitude to the delegation sent by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, with whom he shared this feast.
At noon, from the window of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope appeared to pray the Angelus with the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square. In his remarks, Leo XIV issued an urgent appeal to the international community to end the armed conflicts that are tearing so many regions of the world apart.

“Let the weapons fall silent. Let paths of true dialogue be opened,” he firmly urged. He especially mentioned the suffering of peoples enduring protracted wars, eluding in particular to Ukraine, the Holy Land, and other areas of violence. “The Gospel of Christ is peace. Let us continue to pray and act for peace, with tenacious hope,” he added.
Before concluding, the Pope encouraged the faithful to follow the example of Saints Peter and Paul, who did not hesitate to give their lives for the Gospel. “Faith is transmitted by witness, not just by words. May each of us be an instrument of unity, service, and reconciliation.”
On this solemnity, Leo XIV left a clear message: only firmness in faith and commitment to peace can renew the face of the Church and the world.
