Leo XIV Calls Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan “Realistic” and Hopes Hamas Will Accept It
In a conversation with journalists in Castel Gandolfo, the Pontiff expressed his hope that the 20-point proposal presented by the US will be accepted by all parties involved
Castel Gandolfo, September 30, 2025 – Pope Leo XIV described the peace plan for Gaza proposed by US President Donald Trump, in collaboration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as “realistic.” Speaking to reporters outside Villa Barberini, the Pontiff expressed his hope that Hamas would accept the proposal, noting that so far it appears to be a viable initiative.
The 20-point plan presented at the White House seeks to establish a ceasefire and release the hostages, elements the Pope highlighted as “very interesting.” Furthermore, the Pontiff emphasized the importance of the international community supporting this effort for peace in the region.
During the same conversation, the Pope addressed other current issues, such as the movements of the Flotilla in the Mediterranean, tensions related to the use of nuclear energy by the United States, and the Vatican’s judicial process over the management of Holy See funds. He also responded in English to questions about the controversies surrounding Cardinal Cupich.
This intervention by Pope Leo XIV underscores his commitment to diplomacy and the search for peaceful solutions to international conflicts, reaffirming the Vatican’s role as a mediator in promoting peace and justice in the world.
