Lefebvrians ordain four bishops and complete the schism
The imminent episcopal consecrations of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) on July 1, 2026, have marked a turning point in the relationship with the Vatican
The ordination of four new bishops —Fathers Paschalis Schreiber (Switzerland), Michał Goldade (USA), Michał Poininet de Sivry (France) and Marek Hanappier (France)— without a papal mandate has not only formalized a doctrinal break, but has been staged before a global audience through an unprecedented technical display.
A schism between liturgy and technology
What Rome interprets as an act of schism, the Society has presented as a large, ultratraditionalist gathering with a global reach. The ceremony in Écône, Switzerland, the historic site of the seminary founded by Marcel Lefebvre, has been dubbed by some critics as a kind of “ultratraditionalist Woodstock.”
Modernity has contrasted sharply with the conservative liturgy they defend:
- Global broadcast: The event was streamed live , allowing unprecedented international visibility for an act that the Church considers schismatic.
- Contemporary logistics: The organization provided partner hotels, reserved parking spaces, and food stalls that operated using cashless payment systems and QR codes.
- Merchandising: Attendees were able to purchase a commemorative box called “Cuvée Écône 2026”, which contained four types of wine whose labels displayed episcopal symbols, a way of remembering the historic event.
The legal conflict: Excommunication and legitimacy
Beyond the staged events, the Catholic Church maintains a precise normative framework for evaluating these acts. According to canon law, consecrations without the Pope’s mandate carry an automatic excommunication (latae sententiae) , a sanction that takes effect without the need for a formal declaration.
It is essential to understand the technical distinction that the Holy See emphasizes:
- Validity versus licitness: The Church recognizes the sacramental validity of ordinations—the new bishops possess apostolic succession—but declares their absolute illicitness and lack of legitimacy because they lack the canonical missio granted by the Pontiff.
- Scope of the penalty: Excommunication is personal and applies to those who confer and receive the order, although there is a risk that members of the Fraternity may incur individual schism if they express formal adherence to the acts of the excommunicated.
The Holy See’s response: “deep sorrow”
The prevailing sentiment in the Holy See is one of “deep sorrow” at what is considered an unnecessary tear in the robe of the Church.
Pope Leo XIV, in a final attempt to avert this schism, personally urged the members of the Society to reverse course, appealing to their conscience and the spiritual good of the faithful. According to official statements, the Holy See regrets that the Society has chosen this path, reiterating that the Church has always remained open to dialogue, but cannot ignore the Lefebvrists’ rejection of fundamental doctrinal elements, specifically those emanating from the Second Vatican Council. For Rome, this act is not merely administrative disobedience, but a practical rejection of the Roman Primacy that fractures ecclesial communion.
The paradox of traditionalism
The conflict has exposed a fracture that historians like Agostino Giovagnoli define as a fundamental paradox: “We are faced with traditionalists who deny Tradition.” With the consecration now complete, the Catholic Church faces an unprecedented scenario: a schism that is not only doctrinal but also a media event broadcast before the eyes of the world, leaving room for agreement in a position that, for now, is nonexistent.
