Launch of the Platform for Divestment in Mining at the Vatican
“The common good above profit”: 40 religious organizations demand ethical consistency in Church investments
The Holy See Press Office has officially announced a press conference to launch the Mining Divestment Platform (Piattaforma di Disinvestimento nell’Ambito Minerario) on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:30 am The event will be held in a hybrid format at the Holy See Press Office (Via della Conciliazione 54, Vatican City) and will be streamed live on the Vatican News YouTube channel.
According to the official bulletin published today by the Holy See (B0211), the following will act as main spokespeople:
- His Eminence Cardinal Fabio Baggio , Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development
- Em.mo Card. Álvaro Ramazzini , Bishop of Huehuetenango (Guatemala)
- HE Mons. Vicente Ferreira , Bishop of the Liberation of Nossa Senhora (Brazil) and advisor of the Churches and Mining Network
- Yolanda Flores , leader of the Aymara people of Peru, in territories affected by the extraction of critical minerals
- Sister Anneliese Herzig , Missionary of the Most Holy Redeemer, responsible for the Department of Mission and Social Affairs of the Austrian Episcopal Conference
- Sister Maamalifar M. Poreku , Missionary of Our Lady of Africa (MSOLA), originally from Ghana, with extensive experience in justice, peace and integral ecology
- Br. Dario Bossi , Comboni priest, coordinator of the Churches and Mining Network and former advisor to the CNBB (Brazil)
The conference will have simultaneous translation into Italian, English, and Spanish, both for in-person participants and those following the event virtually. This official announcement confirms and updates the previous information regarding the First Meeting of the Platform (March 19-21, 2026, in Rome), which was supported by dozens of faith-based organizations, religious congregations, and academic institutions. The central objective remains to promote ethical coherence in the Church’s investments, aligned with the integral ecology of Laudato Si’ , Mensuram Bonam , and the Pastoral Guidelines on the Impacts of Mining, avoiding complicity with predatory extractivism and promoting climate justice and the rights of affected communities.
