Iván Díaz, winner at the Catholic Music Awards, releases “Virgencita Morena”

A song with the soul of mariachi and a Guadalupan heart

Iván Díaz, winner at the Catholic Music Awards, releases “Virgencita Morena”

Renowned Catholic singer-songwriter Iván Díaz, winner of Best Liturgical Song in Spanish at the   2025 Catholic Music Awards in Rome, presents his latest composition,  “Virgencita Morena” (Dark -Skinned Virgin), a moving musical tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Mother of the Americas.

With traditional mariachi melodies and lyrics full of tenderness and faith,  “Virgencita Morena”  is a prayer set to music. From the first verse— “I come today, Little Virgin, to your feet, to give thanks for always being faithful” —the song invites the believer to approach the Virgin Mary with gratitude and trust, as she intercedes for and accompanies the people of God

Each verse is imbued with Marian spirituality: from the recognition of Mary as the “tabernacle of salvation”  to her role in the story of Tepeyac, where she manifested a message of  “faith and peace”  to the humble Juan Diego. The chorus—which proclaims  “Little Dark Virgin, heaven and earth sing to you” —raises a universal praise that unites people under her mantle.

‘Little Dark Virgin’ was born from the desire to thank our Mother for her constant presence in the lives of the Latin American people. I wanted to write something that choirs could make their own in Guadalupe celebrations around the world, with that familiar mariachi sound that fills us with faith and joy”, said Iván Díaz

The singer-songwriter, known for his deep commitment to evangelization through music, has left a significant mark on the Hispanic Church. Among his most outstanding works are  “Nuestra Alegría” (Our Joy), the anthem of the Fifth National Encuentro Nacional de Pastoral de Hispano en el Unidos (Fifth National Meeting of Hispanic Pastoral Ministry in the United States);  “Aquí Estoy” (Here I Am), with Fr. Rob Galea, the official song of Cristonautas Park, written by Ricardo Grzona, Iván Díaz, Fr. Rob Galea, and   for Cristonautas Park at World Youth Day Panama 2019 ; and the English version of the anthem for WYD Lisbon 2023.

His most recent international recognition came with the award for best liturgical song in Spanish for  “Pan del Cielo” (Bread from Heaven), awarded at the 2025 Catholic Music Awards held in Rome, for its liturgical and musical beauty

With  “Virgencita Morena”, Iván Díaz delivers a new gem of faith that combines Guadalupan devotion, Latin American identity, and the musical tradition of mariachi, offering the Church a song that will touch hearts and resonate in the December celebrations and beyond.
