Israeli incursions into Gaza Strip intensify
At least five tunnels used by Hamas to store weapons and military equipment destroyed
Pope Francis has expressed his deep concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army has invaded Palestinian territory. In a speech delivered on 25 October 2023, the Pope said the invasion is “an escalation of violence that will only bring more suffering to the civilian population”.
The Pope also called the parties to “cease the fire and return to the negotiating table”. In a message posted on his Twitter account, the Pope said that “violence will not resolve the conflict, it will only aggravate it”.
The Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip was condemned by the international community, which called on Israel to cease hostilities. The UN Security Council held an emergency session to discuss the security crisis, but did not adopt a resolution condemning the invasion.
The ground invasion is a major development in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. It could have a significant impact on the region’s future, as it could lead to an escalation of violence or a new stalemate in peace negotiations.
Pope Francis’ comments are a reminder that the international community is concerned about the situation in the Gaza Strip. The Pope called on the parties to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict.
