Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the basis of the sixth call for the Guadalupe Scholarship Program from Harambee for women scientists from sub-Saharan Africa will be published, which will remain open with a 45-day application period at www.harambee.es

This program, created in 2019 in memory of the Spanish scientist Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri, beatified that same year, provides mobility scholarships to women from sub-Saharan Africa to expand their scientific horizons in research outside their country.

In these years, a total of 25 scientists have enjoyed these scholarships, with research projects supported by Harambee ONGD. Seven have been established by the Chair of Sustainable Chemistry of the UNED with funding from the City Council of Puertollano.

The scholarship recipients have come from Nigeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Uganda, DR Congo and Senegal. At the beginning of 2025, Nigerian biologist Brakemi Egbedi has arrived in Vigo, where she will research the production of marine collagen from fishery by-products at the CSIC Marine Research Institute.

A Scientific Committee, made up of prestigious Spanish researchers, evaluates the suitability of the applicants and selects those with the best CV, among those who meet the required requirements, including a commitment to return to their country.

The vice president of Harambee ONGD, Ramón Pardo de Santayana, states that the program aims to promote leadership and give visibility to African women in scientific, technological and humanistic research, promote equality in the academic field and help complete scientific and technical training and specialization.

Harambee NGO is an international solidarity initiative that promotes, through cooperation and communication, development in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting educational projects to promote women, maternal and child health and food security. As well as the dissemination of the values ​​and qualities of African culture throughout the rest of the world.
