I am the way, the truth, and the life: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, May 3, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel for Sunday, May 3, 2026, entitled, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
The risen Jesus Christ lives in the Church. We are called to be Christians in the Church. Because that is what God willed, who did not create you for solitude , but for relationship , communion , and self-giving .
Christ wanted his disciples to live the faith in community . In previous Sundays, the Word has spoken to us extensively on this topic, inviting us to open ourselves to the gift of the Spirit , who makes the Church grow and, within it, each and every Christian.
Last Sunday we reflected on how we are called to be sheep, following the Good Shepherd. Yes. But not solitary sheep, but together with other sheep, in the flock of the Church.
Today, the Word helps us to delve deeper into the mystery of the Church, temple of the Holy Spirit, whose cornerstone is Jesus Christ and we are the living stones, forming a sacred priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices to God through our union with Christ.
The church building is a concrete sign of the Church community, formed by the living stones that we believers are. The cornerstone of this spiritual temple is Christ, and united to him, and through the gift and action of the Holy Spirit, we too are called to participate in building this living temple.
It is God who takes the initiative, he himself is the main architect of this project ( if the Lord does not build the house…) , but God does not want to carry out his project without our collaboration.
Therefore, from the beginning, the Holy Spirit raises up ministries and distributes charisms. Thus arose the first seven deacons, ordained by the Apostles, praying with the laying on of hands, as we see in the first reading.
The Catechism (1268, 1179) states that the baptized become “living stones” for “building up a spiritual house, for a holy priesthood.” Through Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. Worship “in spirit and in truth” of the New Covenant is not confined to any one place. The whole earth is holy and has been entrusted to the children of men… The Body of the risen Christ is the spiritual temple from which the fountain of living water springs. Incorporated into Christ by the Holy Spirit, “we are the temple of the living God.”
And the Lord especially tells us today: do not let your hearts be troubled, believe in God, and believe also in me… I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus Christ is the cornerstone on which you must build the edifice of your life so that it has solidity and withstands the difficulties of each day .
Jesus Christ is the way that leads us to eternal life. He himself is the way . To find the meaning of life, we must follow him, who is the only Teacher and the only Lord.
Jesus Christ is the truth , the truth that sets us free . He reveals to us the truth about God, the truth about humanity, and the truth about the world.
Jesus Christ is life , the one and only true life. Faced with so many people living in despair and burden because they seek life in idols, Jesus Christ tells us: “ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest .” He is the one who can fill your life , the one who can give you the peace and happiness that the things of this world cannot provide , the one who can enable you to live now and walk in the joy and hope of inheriting eternal life.
How is your life? Does your life have meaning? Are you overwhelmed? Let yourself be loved by God! Embark on the adventure of following Jesus Christ! Walk His path! Love Him who is the truth! Live the new life of a Christian! And your darkness will turn into light, the desert of your life into an oasis. Dare to try!
Happy Sunday! Happy Eucharist!
Come, Holy Spirit
