I am the resurrection and the life: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, November 2, 2025, entitled “I am the resurrection and the life ”.

***

Today, the Church celebrates the solemnity of the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and invites us to dedicate this day to prayer for all our departed brothers and sisters.

The Church wants us to remember that, until Jesus Christ comes at the end of time, some of his disciples are pilgrims on earthothers, now deceased, are being purified; while still others are already in heaven, glorified, contemplating God as he truly is. There is communion between the Church in heaven and the Church on earth. The Church is the Church militant, striving on earth to reach the goal of eternal life; it is the Church suffering, being purified to share in the glory of God; it is the Church triumphant, having already reached the goal of faith and living with God forever.

Therefore, mindful of this communion of the entire Mystical Body of Christ, it is meaningful to remember and, above all, to pray for the deceased. For all the deceased: those we knew and those we didn’t know, friends and those we didn’t like; those who did great things and those who went unnoticed.

The whole Church is in prayer, living the mystery of the communion of saints.  We pray to the Church Triumphant, that she who already lives with God may intercede with the Father for us who are struggling on our journey toward the goal of eternal life. We pray for the Church Suffering, that these brothers and sisters of ours may soon enjoy eternal life.

At the same time, today’s celebration is meant to remind us all that the goal of faith is eternal life. Indeed, God loves you so much that He did not create you to live only one hundred years: God loves you so much that He created you to live a life without end, eternal life.

And therefore you cannot forget that this is the goal of those of us who walk on the earth. Your goal is not to make money or accumulate academic degrees. Your goal is not to be important or famous in the eyes of others. Your goal is none other than eternal life, because it profits a man nothing to gain the whole world if he loses his soul.

And when, at the end of your life, the Lord asks you to give an account, He will not ask for your bank statements, nor your academic transcripts, nor the deeds to your properties, nor your medals or trophies, nor your popularity rating…

At the twilight of life, we will be judged on our love for Love itself, said St. John of the Cross. The only thing the Lord will ask of you is whether you have been faithful to the Gospel and the Church, and whether you have gone through life doing good, living out the works of mercy. That must be your only wealth. And it will be the only thing capable of making you happy, the only thing capable of filling your heart. God alone suffices, and only by letting yourself be filled by Him will you be truly happy.

Come, Holy Spirit!
