Theological Virtues: What is Hope?

Hope: Living with Your Eyes Set on Heaven

Hope is the theological virtue that inspires us to desire and yearn for eternal life, trusting in Christ’s promises and relying on the Holy Spirit’s grace.

The Catechism (n. 1817) teaches:

“Hope is the theological virtue by which we aspire to the Kingdom of Heaven and to eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in the promises of Christ and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit.”

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux expressed it beautifully:

“Hope is like a wing that lifts me to God.”

How to live in Hope today

In a society marked by uncertainty, fear of the future, and hopelessness, this virtue becomes a beacon:

  • Trust that God has the final word, even in the midst of trials.
  • Look beyond immediate success and remember that the ultimate goal is eternal life.
  • Work for a better world without becoming discouraged.
  • Support others with words and gestures of encouragement.

Benedict XVI recalled this in Spe Salvi  (n. 27):

“Man needs a hope that goes beyond. He needs a certainty that cannot be destroyed by anything that might come from outside.”

Practical tips for growing in Hope

  1. Pray the Creed, remembering the promise of eternal life.
  2. Remember the times when God has been faithful in your life.
  3. Offer a word of encouragement each day to someone who needs it.
  4. Practice patience: trust in God’s timing.

Examination of conscience on Hope

  • Do I trust that God is with me in my struggles, or do I let pessimism dominate me?
  • Do I really believe in eternal life, or do I live as if everything ends here?
  • Am I a source of hope for those around me, or do I transmit discouragement?
  • Do I seek my security in God, or only in my strength and projects?

A final key

Christian hope is not naive optimism, but the certainty that Christ has conquered death. As Saint John Paul II said:

“Do not be afraid. Open, indeed, open wide the doors to Christ” (Homily at the beginning of his pontificate, 1978)
