Heading to Gemelli: Pope Leo XIV to be admitted this Tuesday for surgery
The Holy See details the schedule for the Pontiff's lung surgery, which alters his official agenda and delegates the celebration of next Wednesday's Eucharist to Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle
The eyes of the Vatican and the international community have been focused on the Gemelli Polyclinic since Monday. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to be admitted late Tuesday morning, October 13, for the surgery he announced during his last Angelus address, to remove a nodule in his lung detected during routine medical checkups.
As confirmed by Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, the Pope’s post-operative hospital stay is expected to last approximately one week. After receiving numerous messages of support from all five continents, the Pontiff has maintained his schedule of morning audiences, although he will not participate in the afternoon sessions of the meeting dedicated to the document Amoris Laetitia, which is being held in the Paul VI Hall.
The surgery and subsequent recovery period in the hospital have necessitated changes to the summit’s schedule. Among the notable changes is the Mass planned for Wednesday, October 14, in St. Peter’s Square, which will not be presided over by the Pope, but by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, recently elected Dean of the College of Cardinals. During the Eucharist, special prayers will be offered for the Holy Father’s health.
The organization has also confirmed that the Synthesis Report, which was to be drafted at the end of the meeting, will not be published immediately. At the express request of Leo XIV, who has stated his desire to listen to and review the materials and contribute his own perspective once he is medically cleared, publication will be temporarily suspended to allow for his direct contribution to the commitment of the entire Church.
