The Word invites us, as always, to conversion . These Sundays we are listening to the portion of the Gospel of Saint Matthew addressed to the Christian community, to the disciples. And today the word we have heard is very clear.

Who is a disciple of Jesus? The one who says he is a disciple, or the one who obeys Jesus?

The answer given to us by the Gospel itself and all of Scripture is very clear: “My sheep hear my voice ,” says the Lord, “and I know them, and they follow me .” To be a Christian is to live each day listening to the voice of the Lord, welcoming it into our hearts, and desiring to obey Him.

And that is why being a disciple, being a Christian, is living this obedience of faith.

It is a Word that invites you to examine the sincerity of your faith, the sincerity and authenticity of your relationship with God; that is, whether in your heart you confidently accept His Word and wish to live doing His will, or, on the contrary, whether you want to be the god of your life, and lead it according to your plans, your tastes, and your criteria.

This is the meaning of the parable of the two sons. Jesus does not ask which of the two was more well-behaved, but rather, which of the two did what the father wanted?

That’s the key: to listen, to know and to let oneself be known by the Lord and to follow Him.

The second reading also speaks to this. This text from the letter to the Philippians is the counterpoint to original sin.

Adam , being a man, wants to be like God, wants to usurp His place, wants to be master of good and evil, and in doing so, he ruins his life and introduces sin into the world with disastrous consequences for everyone.

In contrast, Jesus Christ, who is God, became man, took on the condition of a servant, obeyed the Father, and thus became the source of salvation for all. That is why Saint Paul says: ” Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus among yourselves .”

Two completely different ways of living. Two ways that present themselves to you every day.

Which do you choose? To choose well, you need the Holy Spirit. Ask Him for the gift of counsel and the gift of piety . The first will give you discernment to know God’s will, the second will make you happy living as a child, enjoying the Father and living in His love.

Because this is the conversion of every day. He who exalts himself will be humbled, while he who humbles himself will be exalted. Do not fear your weakness ; fear your pride and lukewarmness of heart.

That is why Jesus will say in the Gospel what we find so shocking: ” The tax collectors and prostitutes are ahead of you in the journey to the kingdom of God .”

What does the Lord want to tell us? That those who suffer because of their sins and desire a pure heart are closer to the Kingdom of God than the routine faithful, who see in the Church only the system, without their hearts being touched by faith (cf. Benedict XVI).

Come Holy Spirit! (cf. Lk_ 11, 13).
