He called his twelve disciples and sent them out: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the  Gospel for Sunday, June 14, 2026,  entitled, “He called his twelve disciples and sent them out.”

***

The Word that the Lord gives us this Sunday invites us to  discover the  ecclesial dimension  of faith .

God did not create us for solitude, but for  relationship,  giving,  and  communion  . And  He has called us   to live the faith  not in a solitary, individualistic, or virtual way, but  within a community, in His body, which is the Church . With brothers and sisters whom the Lord has given us as companions on our journey  to the goal of  eternal life .

In the first reading, we saw how  the Lord called Moses to establish the  Covenant  with the people.  The Covenant is the Lord’s free choice. The Covenant invites the people to obedience to the Lord and makes them the  Lord ‘s possession  :  a holy people, because  they belong  to the Lord. God has called us to be his people and sheep of his flock; this is the reason for our joy:  our shepherd is God himself, and his goodness knows no bounds.

Thus we sing in the Psalm:  we are his people and sheep of his flock… Serve the Lord with gladness… his mercy is eternal, his faithfulness to all generations.

In the Gospel we contemplate the sending of the Twelve.

The  Apostles , called and sent by Jesus, had to  preach the Word and help their brothers and sisters . What was important was that these workers remain  faithful to the Lord , freely  proclaiming   the Gospel they  had freely  received; even during persecution, trusting in the One who sent them without succumbing to fear, and above all, making  Christ the center of their lives.

The harvest is plentiful:  People are compared to a harvest to be gathered in the Kingdom of God.  God is the owner of the harvest:  Welcome into his Kingdom is his work and grace. He also gives the vocations of disciples. That is why Jesus invites us to pray that the owner of the harvest will send new laborers to proclaim the Good News.

Prayer  for the laborers of the harvest  keeps alive in the disciples the awareness that they have been  called  and  sent  by the grace of God,  not by their qualities or merits.

He sent them to  announce the coming of the Kingdom of God . The  style of missionary work  is simple: God accomplishes great things humbly, like the mustard seed… We are in the time of the New Covenant: the great theophanies of the Old Testament give way to the signs of the New Covenant: the meekness and mercy of God. The work of Christ is not spectacular; it is always silent. In that humility of small things, the seed can grow…

He gave them authority to cast out unclean spirits and to heal every sickness and disease.  The Church is called and sent to establish the Kingdom of God, a kingdom of holiness and life, of truth and grace, of justice, love, and peace.

The Church , like Christ and with Christ,  is called and sent to establish the Kingdom of life  and destroy the dominion of death, so that God, who is Love, may triumph in the world.

Come, Holy Spirit!
