“God in the Opera” Fills the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
An unforgettable night of music and spirituality during Lent
Last Friday, March 20, 2026, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba hosted an exceptional musical event entitled “God in Opera .” Organized by the Navarre Opera Foundation and the Cathedral Chapter, the concert brought together more than 1,300 people—some sources even mention more than 1,500—who filled the naves of the emblematic monument for an evening brimming with emotion and beauty.
The Orchestra and Choir of Córdoba Cathedral performed a carefully curated selection of opera excerpts centered on the theme of God, with a focus particularly suited to the Lenten season. Under the musical direction of Clemente Mata and the artistic direction of Jaime Martorell , the solo voices of Susanna Wolff , Camila Oria , José Moisés Molín , and Alejandro Sánchez shone throughout the evening.
The event was presented by Canon Fernando Cruz-Conde , while Javier Otero de Navascués , president of the Navarra Opera Foundation, acted as narrator, offering contextualizations before each piece that connected the arias with themes of prayer, penance, purification, inner conversion and redemptive suffering.

The origin of this initiative dates back to a three-day event held in the auditorium of the Pablo VI Foundation in Madrid, also promoted by Javier Otero de Navascués. In his own words, the idea arose during the first “God in Opera Advent” concert when Domingo Suárez, from the Catholic Association of Propagandists of Córdoba, and Canon Fernando Cruz-Conde himself saw the potential of bringing it to Córdoba Cathedral during Lent, taking advantage of the magnificent local Orchestra and Choir.
The official statement from the Mosque-Cathedral confirms that the event was organized by the Cathedral Chapter in collaboration with the Opera Foundation of Navarre and the Herrera Oria Cultural Foundation, and promoted by the Catholic Association of Propagandists. The concert included ten excerpts from different operas, each accompanied by explanations that explored their spiritual dimension.
The event was so successful that it reached full capacity, leaving many people unable to attend. For those who missed out or wish to relive the experience, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has published the full recording of the concert on its YouTube channel under the title “God at the Opera Concert ,” a nearly 78-minute video that allows viewers to enjoy the monument’s unique atmosphere at night.
The comments from viewers who have seen the recording reflect the emotion of the moment: many highlight the beauty of the performances, especially Camila Oria’s, and appreciate the possibility of accessing this “water in the desert” through music, describing it as “God present and living.”
This concert is part of a series of similar initiatives; a new event of this type has already been announced for Easter, keeping alive the proposal to unite the grandeur of opera with spirituality in one of the most unique spaces of universal heritage.
An evening that will undoubtedly remain in the memory of those who experienced it and those who can now enjoy it through the official recording.
