From your classroom to Rome: a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology endorsed by the Holy See
From your classroom to Rome: a Bachelor's Degree in Theology endorsed by the Holy See
A Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from home and in Spanish? Is it really possible?
Yes! The Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome has taken a bold step: you can take the first year of the Bachelor’s Degree in Theology completely online and in Spanish. And this offering has now been expanded to two specialties: Dogmatic Theology and Spiritual Theology.
It’s a unique opportunity for those who want high-level theological training without having to cross the ocean… at least not yet.
What has made this innovation possible?
The key lies in the approval of the Holy See, which has allowed the Faculty to offer part of its program online. This not only guarantees the academic and canonical validity of the degree but also opens the doors to students from all over the world, especially from Latin America. The decision reflects a vision of openness and accessibility.
What specialties can be chosen?
The program offers two exciting paths, each with fascinating features:
- Dogmatic Theology, where the great doctors of the Church, such as Saint Thomas Aquinas, are studied in depth, and the thought of Joseph Ratzinger, a bridge between faith and contemporary culture, is explored in depth.
- Spiritual Theology, which trains students in spiritual guidance and direction, the direction of Ignatian exercises, and the formation of others, based on the great saints and masters of the interior life.
Who is this program for?
For priests, religious, seminarians, and lay people with an academic, pastoral, or spiritual vocation. This is a serious, demanding, and deeply formative proposal, designed for those seeking a personal and rigorous theological synthesis.
What advantages does this online option offer?
Many. Among them:
- Flexible hours, with classes held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (3:00 PM to 7:45 PM Rome time), ideal for those living in Latin America.
- Considerable financial savings by avoiding travel and accommodation costs in Rome during the first year.
- Access to internationally renowned professors, with classes taught entirely in Spanish.
- Personalized tutoring, which supports students in their learning, research, and writing process.
And what happens after the first year?
The second year is taught in Rome, in person and in Italian. But don’t worry: Italian reinforcement classes are offered starting in the first year, so the transition is smooth and natural.
What makes this program unique compared to other similar offerings?
Its status as a degree recognized by the Holy See. The degree is awarded by a Pontifical Athenaeum, which guarantees its international recognition and academic and ecclesial weight. Furthermore, it combines technology, tradition, and academic excellence like few other programs in the world.
How has this modality been received in its first edition?
It has been a resounding success; we thank God for it. Students from different countries have appreciated the academic quality, the close support, and the real opportunity to study without geographical or economic barriers.
Is there a fully remote option for those who won’t be able to come to Rome for their second year?
Yes. The Ateneo also offers a biennial diploma, completely online and in Spanish, in the same specialties and schedule. This is an ideal option for those seeking a solid yet more flexible education. It grants 60 ECTS credits over two years. As this is a bachelor’s degree, it also requires prior completion of the six-year philosophical-theological seminary program or a bachelor’s degree in theology.
When do classes start, and how can I register?
Classes start on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
