Francis is recovering: progressing progressively
The Pope continues to improve after his lung infection. Although his participation in the Holy Week celebrations is still uncertain, he remains active and in good spirits
Pope Francis is continuing his convalescence with gradual progress, according to the latest update provided by the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, April 8. From his residence at Casa Santa Marta, the Pontiff is progressing positively after being hospitalized for a polymicrobial respiratory infection that led to bilateral pneumonia.
The Pope’s public appearance last Sunday, April 6, during the celebration of the Jubilee of the Sick and Healthcare Workers, was received with surprise and hope by the faithful. Although his presence was brief, a few words and a blessing were enough to confirm that his general condition continues on the path to recovery. “Happy Sunday, thank you very much,” he expressed serenely.
According to the most recent medical report, Francis is showing stable clinical progress: his mobility is gradually improving, as are his breathing capacity and voice. Although he still requires respiratory support, his use of oxygen has been reduced during the day, limiting himself to high-flow oxygenation only at night, as needed.
Active in Essential Matters
Despite his convalescence, the Holy Father has not interrupted his pastoral and governing work. He remains abreast of ecclesial affairs, receives documentation from various dicasteries, and maintains telephone contact with individuals and institutions. On Monday, he even received Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, at his residence.
Furthermore, the Pope continues to celebrate daily Eucharist from the private chapel on the second floor of Casa Santa Marta and has maintained his closeness to the Christian community in Gaza, with whom he has been in contact through phone calls to the parish of the Holy Family.
Holy Week: Caution and Hope
Although the next General Audience, scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, has been canceled, it is expected that the Pope’s prepared message will be disseminated through Vatican media, as has been done on other occasions during his convalescence.
The Press Office has indicated that, at this time, no final decision has been made regarding his participation in the Holy Week liturgies, although it is not ruled out that he may be present in some capacity, depending on how his health evolves in the coming days.
A further medical update is scheduled for Friday, April 11.
