Five key moments to limit screen time for children

Today,  we need to disconnect in order to connect.  That’s why it’s essential to set clear limits on screen time for the well-being of our children and families.

Here are  five times when it’s especially important to prevent children from using screens or electronic devices:

3. At mealtimes

Mealtimes are sacred moments for the family. They are a time to share, talk, and connect with one another. Allowing children to use screens during meals distracts them from this vital experience.

2. In a tantrum

This is another crucial moment when you should limit screen time for children, and we’ll explain why. When a child is angry or frustrated, it’s important to provide emotional support and help them manage their emotions and develop their frustration tolerance. Allowing them to retreat to a screen during a tantrum can become a form of escape, rather than addressing the underlying problem. This prevents them from learning to manage their emotions or self-regulate. We recommend this article where we expand on this topic:   Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Calm Your Children with Screens

3. When you are with other children or family members

Social interaction is essential for child development. When children spend time with others, whether friends or family, it is crucial that they are present and actively participate in the interactions rather than being absorbed in a screen.

4. When he says he’s bored

Boredom is an opportunity for creativity and discovery. Allowing children to be bored from time to time can stimulate their imagination and encourage them to seek out meaningful activities. Constant screen time to avoid boredom can limit their ability to develop problem-solving and self-direction skills. We recommend:  Why you should let your child be bored

5. Before going to sleep

Screen time before bed can interfere with children’s sleep quality. The blue light emitted by electronic devices can disrupt the circadian rhythm and make it harder to fall asleep. Establishing a screen-free bedtime routine can help children prepare for sleep more effectively.

It’s important to set clear limits on screen time to ensure our children’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. By identifying and  avoiding these five key moments , we can foster a healthy balance between technology and other important activities in children’s lives.
