Films to Experience Lent More Deeply
Recommendations to Accompany Your Prayer, Fasting, and Conversion During This Time of Grace
Lent is a privileged time of penance, prayer, and almsgiving, in which the Church invites us to turn our hearts toward the Passion of Christ and journey toward the Resurrection. Cinema, when it serves truth and beauty, can be a powerful instrument of evangelization, as the Popes have recognized.
Below is a selection of recommended films. They all help to reflect on Lenten themes such as sacrifice, conversion, forgiveness, martyrdom, and fidelity to Christ.
1. The Passion of the Christ (2004, Mel Gibson)
The most intense and contemplative of all. Filmed in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew, it follows the last days of Jesus hour by hour. ACI Prensa recommends it year after year as the quintessential Lenten film. It is not suitable for young children due to its realistic depiction of the events, but for adults, it is an experience of profound prayer. Ideal for Lenten Fridays or Good Friday.
2. Jesus of Nazareth (1977, Franco Zeffirelli)
A classic miniseries that faithfully recounts the entire life of Christ. Blessed Paul VI publicly praised the director. Perfect for watching in stages during Lent: the miracles in the first weeks, the Passion in the last. Recommended by ACI Prensa and numerous dioceses.
3. Ben-Hur (1959, William Wyler)
An epic masterpiece that won 11 Oscars. The story of Judah Ben-Hur shows how his encounter with Jesus transforms hatred into forgiveness and revenge into redemption. It appears on the Vatican’s list of “important films” and is included in nearly every Catholic Lenten recommendation. Ideal for the whole family.
4. Of Gods and Men (2010, Xavier Beauvois)
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. It tells the true story of the Trappist monks of Tibhirine (Algeria) who choose to remain with their Muslim community despite terrorism. A masterclass in love unto martyrdom and fidelity to one’s vocation. Recommended by FilaSiete , Christus , and numerous dioceses as one of the best Catholic films of recent decades.
5. A Man for All Seasons (1966, Fred Zinnemann)
Biography of Saint Thomas More, martyr under Henry VIII. Winner of 6 Oscars. It portrays fidelity to conscience and the Church above any political pressure. It consistently appears on lists of recommended films about saints by ACI Prensa and on the list of the 100 best Catholic films.
6. Marcellin, bread and wine (1954, Ladislao Vajda)
A Spanish classic that has touched generations. The story of an orphaned boy who finds his true Father in the crucified Christ. Winner of the Silver Bear and recommended by ACI Prensa for family viewing. It teaches the innocence of faith and the closeness of Jesus to children.
7. Karol: The Man Who Became Pope (2005)
The youth and maturity of Saint John Paul II. It shows how faith and suffering forged a great saint amidst war and communism. Highly recommended by ACI Prensa in its lists of films about saints.
8. I Prefer Paradise (2010, Giacomo Campiotti)
About Saint Philip Neri, “the saint of joy.” He demonstrates that holiness is not sadness, but celebration and total surrender to God. Ideal for remembering that Lent leads to Easter joy. Recommended by many dioceses.
9. Risen (2016, Kevin Reynolds)
Seen through the eyes of a Roman tribune investigating the Resurrection. It reinforces the historicity of the faith and is excellent for the last week of Lent.
10. The Ten Commandments (1956, Cecil B. DeMille)
A monumental classic about Moses and the Exodus. Perfect for the first week of Lent, when the liturgy speaks of the desert and the Law of God. It’s on the Vatican list and recommended for all Catholic families.
