Equal Dignity between Women and Men: An Ongoing Commitment
At the 69th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, Gabriella Gambino Highlights the Need to Eradicate Poverty, Promote Education, and Generate a Cultural Shift Regarding Family and Motherhood
On March 13, 2025, during the 69th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, Gabriella Gambino, Under-Secretary-General of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, emphasized that, despite progress, much remains to be done in the pursuit of true equality between men and women.
Gambino emphasized that the equal dignity of every human being is a fundamental principle that must be recognized in all spheres of society and that the eradication of poverty and universal access to education are essential steps toward achieving this equality. She also emphasized the importance of a cultural shift that values women’s role in the family, stressing that motherhood should not be seen as an obstacle, but rather as an invaluable contribution to society.
Gambino’s speech coincided with the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and reinforced Pope Francis’s call to provide equal opportunities for women as the basis for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
