Disarming Communication
A call from Pope Francis for the World Day of Social Communications 2025
The World Day of Social Communications 2025 has a clear and powerful message: “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts.” Pope Francis invites us to transform our way of communicating, moving away from aggressiveness and the search for domination to promote, instead, the spread of hope.
In the field of communication, especially in the political, social and economic spheres, the word “armed” has been common. Opinions and ideologies have faced each other in a constant battle, where arguments leave little room for dialogue. However, Pope Francis has been working for years to build a “more human” communication. This year’s theme adds another piece to this mosaic.
Against the “Paradigm of Competition”
The official note highlights that today, communication is often characterized by violence and attack, rather than establishing bases for constructive dialogue. It is therefore crucial to “disarm communication, purify it of aggressiveness.” This change must go from talk shows to confrontations on social networks, where a paradigm of competition, opposition and desire for dominance prevails.
A Communication of Hope
Pope Francis advocates a communication imbued with hope. For Christians, hope is not just a concept, it is a person: Christ. This communication must always be linked to a community project. When we speak of Christian hope, we cannot separate ourselves from a community that lives the message of Jesus in an authentic way, demonstrating the hope that this entails. This community must be able to communicate the hope of Christ with deeds and words in today’s world.
Pope Francis’ message for the World Day of Social Communications 2025 is an invitation to all professionals in the sector to share hope with gentleness and to disarm any form of aggressive communication. It is a call to build a dialogue based on understanding and peace, thus reflecting the true Christian spirit.
