Blessed Floribert: Witness of Peace, Honesty, and Hope
Welcoming the pilgrims who came to Rome for the beatification of Floribert Bwana Chui, Pope Leo XIV told them that, in a continent full of young people, their figure shows that they can be a leaven of "unarmed and disarming" peace
The Holy Father welcomed pilgrims to Rome for the beatification, held yesterday at Saint Paul Outside the Walls, of the young Congolese customs officer belonging to the Community of Sant’Egidio, who was murdered in Goma in 2008 for refusing to allow shipments of spoiled food to pass through.
This is a region torn apart by violence, where the young man carried out his battle for peace with gentleness, serving the poor.
Remembrance of Pope Francis
The Pope began his speech by quoting his predecessor, Francis, who, during his trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in January 2023, during the well-attended meeting with young Congolese people at the Martyrs’ Stadium, amid music, dancing, and testimonies, wished to pay special tribute to Floribert Bwana Chui.
Furthermore, after expressing his joy at the beatification of Floribert Bwana Chui, Leo XIV also greeted the bishops, especially those of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He also addressed words of affection to the mother and family of the new blessed, highlighting the importance of his witness.
Life and martyrdom of Floribert
The Pontiff recalled that Floribert was martyred in Goma in 2007, at the age of 26, for his courage in blocking spoiled food supplies that would have harmed the population. His example of integrity and commitment to justice was highlighted as a way of living his faith in the midst of difficulties.
The power of prayer
In his address, the Bishop of Rome emphasized that Floribert’s strength came from a life marked by prayer, listening to the Word of God, and communion with his brothers and sisters. He lived the spirituality of the Community of Sant’Egidio, centered on the “three Ps”: prayer, poverty, and peace, and was especially close to street children and the most vulnerable.
A dream of peace for Africa
The Pope shared the words of Floribert, who dreamed of a world without war or hatred, where children would grow up in peace. He emphasized that, despite the difficulties, the young man did not resign himself to evil and trusted in a better future, fueled by hope in Jesus’ promise: “I will not leave you as orphans.”
The legacy of a young man who inspires young people
The Holy Father affirmed that Floribert, in a continent full of young people, shows how they can be a ferment of “unarmed and disarming” peace.
His testimony highlights the importance of lay people and young people in building a more just and peaceful society.
Finally, Pope Leo invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary and the newly blessed Floribert for the swift achievement of peace in Kivu, the Congo, and throughout Africa, trusting that the example of this martyr will inspire profound changes in the region.
