And you, who do you say that I am?: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, August 23, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, August 24, 2026 entitled, “And you, who do you say that I am?”.
***
The Lord addresses two important questions to us today, as he did to the disciples, especially the second: Who do people say the Son of Man is? And you, who do you say I am?
To the first question, we would also hear disparate answers today.
But the fundamental question is for you to answer: Who is Jesus to you? Your life depends on the answer you give to this question.
What is your relationship with Jesus Christ? Because before the Lord, we can be curious, sympathetic, learned…
But there is only one answer that is truly worthwhile and will change your life for the better. It is the answer Peter gives: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God .
And that you can tell the Lord that you are much more than a sympathizer: I am a disciple ; that is, an ‘apprentice’ who is at the feet of the Master, listening to his voice every day and following him wherever he goes.
Jesus Christ is the treasure worth selling everything for . He is the Savior, the Messiah, the only one who can completely fill your heart, thirsting for happiness and life.
But only someone who has the Holy Spirit in their heart can say that. Therefore, ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit every day! Ask Him to make you fall in love with Jesus Christ.
Furthermore, in this Gospel the Lord speaks to us about the Church: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
God did not create you for solitude, but for relationship and communion. You cannot live your faith alone.
We have been called to live the faith in a family, in a people, in his Body, which is the Church: No one can have God as Father if he does not have the Church as Mother (Saint Cyprian).
The Church will be fiercely attacked by the Evil One, but the power of hell will not defeat her .
We must always live in the confidence that, even if the boat is tossed about, Jesus Christ is the one who guides and protects it.
We must value the mission of the Pope , head of the Church. It is necessary that each day you love the Church more, that you love the Pope more, and that you strive to listen to his teachings and put them into practice; that you pray daily, asking God to intercede for the Pope and the other pastors of the Church, in the tremendous responsibility they have of guiding God’s people to eternal life.
Come Holy Spirit! (cf. _ Lk_ 11, 13).
