Abortion Marketing
Data, Impact, and Communication Strategies
According to the latest data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics and Census), 320,656 births were registered in Spain in 2023, representing a 2.6% drop compared to the previous year. The fertility rate stood at 1.12 children per woman, and births to foreign mothers accounted for 31.3% of the total. That year also saw a negative natural balance of approximately -115,000, as deaths (436,124) far exceeded births. A total of 103,097 abortions were registered in 2023.
In this situation, the group of gynecologists Jérôme Lejeune has called for “transparency” and “truthful” information after the Ministry of Equality asserted that post-abortion syndrome does not exist because it is not supported by science.
«We consider that the interruption of pregnancy, even though it is legal in our country, constitutes a medical procedure of enormous importance that entails consequences, and that always requires true, complete and rigorous information about its characteristics and possible effects.» In the opinion of these professionals, «only in this way can we guarantee that the woman can make free and fully conscious decisions, accompanied at all times from a medical and human point of view.»
As more and more scientific data on the physical and mental effects become available, the Pedro Sánchez government, through the Ministry of Health, has launched a website called “I Want to Abort,” designed to offer information and guidance on voluntary abortion in Spain. The platform, presented as an official resource, includes detailed steps, updated regulations, and an interactive map with data for each autonomous community to guide women who wish to access this procedure.
According to the description on the page itself, the goal is to accompany users throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the actual procedure, answering frequently asked questions such as whether abortion is free, what happens if you don’t have a health card, up to what week of pregnancy can the procedure be performed, and what requirements apply to minors under 16.
The Sánchez government wants to “shield” abortion in the Constitution, which ends the lives of more than 100,000 babies each year in Spain.
The launch of this campaign comes at a time when Spain is experiencing one of the lowest birth rates in recent history, sparking a political and social debate about the government’s priorities regarding family policies, reproductive health, and maternity support.
This marketing campaign can be described as a values and lifestyle marketing strategy. It aims to convey a specific way of viewing abortion so that it is widely accepted by women, especially young women, and that it entails a lifestyle that favors a materialistic, individualistic society, uncommitted sexual relations, etc.
Furthermore, it is reductionist. For example, it omits the physical and mental consequences for women who have had an abortion, its legal characteristics, and its demographic implications.
As can be seen, this abortion marketing strategy fosters a culture of death as opposed to a culture of life. In addition to ignoring its economic cost, it constitutes manipulation, as it distorts reality and omits information of particular relevance to the health of women who have abortions.
