A Gathering at the Table: Where Fraternity Becomes Gospel
In a gesture of profound simplicity, Leo XIV shared a meal in Castel Gandolfo with two hundred vulnerable people, reaffirming that true closeness is the most eloquent language of faith
On a Saturday in July that will forever be remembered for its fraternity, the gardens of the Castel Gandolfo summer residence were transformed into an unexpected gathering. There, far removed from the usual protocol, Leo XIV sat down to share a meal with two hundred people in vulnerable situations, an initiative that seeks to establish itself as an annual pillar of solidarity.
The day, which began with the celebration of a Mass with a liturgical focus on the care of creation, was not only an act of charity, but a lived experience of the Gospel in its purest form. For the Pope, this luncheon—organized by Borgo Laudato Si’—represents a call to a Church of “open doors,” where the face of God is revealed in the eyes of those in need.
Among the attendees, who arrived accompanied by various social organizations and parishes from Rome, were homeless people, refugees, and migrants, who shared a simple meal in an atmosphere of warmth and conversation. After the meal, the guests had the opportunity to explore the trails of the Borgo Laudato si’ natural area, a place specifically designed to promote integral ecology and respect for our common home.
This gathering is not an isolated event. The initiative, which had its most recent precedent in August 2025, now seeks to invite a different diocese each year, ensuring that contact with nature and fraternity reaches the most remote corners where solitude is often the norm.
By sharing a meal with the least among us, Leo XIV sought to remind the world that charity is not a theory, but a practical exercise in presence. In this gesture, the Church returns to its roots: where bread is broken with one’s brother or sister, the message of the Gospel ceases to be merely a written word and becomes a tangible act of hope.
