Young People and Faith: Is It Possible for Them to Believe?

Experiences, Advice, and Engaging Proposals

Young People and Faith: Is It Possible for Them to Believe?

One of the great challenges for the Church and families is to accompany young people on their journey of faith. In a period marked by the search for identity, existential doubts, the influence of digital culture, and relativism, a natural question arises:  is it possible for young people to believe?  The answer is a clear yes, although it requires creativity, patience, and close, authentic accompaniment.

Faith in youth: a time of searching and encounter

Youth is a vital time when questions about the meaning of life, love, justice, and transcendence deepen. Many young people question the existence of God and the value of faith in their lives. It’s not unusual for them to go through periods of doubt or distance, but these crises can open the door to a genuine encounter with Christ.

Saint John Paul II, in his Letter to Young People (1985), recalled that God is present in the restless heart of every young person, calling them to discover his love and his plan for each one.

Real experiences: testimonies that inspire

Numerous testimonies from young Catholics confirm that faith can be a transformative force at this stage:

  • Laura, 18, shares: “In my parish’s youth group, I found a space to be myself. The conversations about the lives of the saints and the experience of prayer have helped me seek God in everyday life.”

  • Diego, 24, comments: “I was very hesitant at first, but volunteering showed me that faith is about living love in action. It changed my outlook on life and helped me feel part of something bigger.”

These experiences demonstrate that faith flourishes when young people feel welcomed, listened to, and supported in a community.

Tips for accompanying young people in faith

For parents, catechists, and educators, here are some tips to make the journey of faith engaging and meaningful for young people:

  1. Listen with respect and without prejudice : Faith isn’t imposed, it’s invited. It’s essential to open spaces for them to freely express their doubts and questions.

  2. Living the faith with coherence and joy : Young people value sincerity and authenticity. Showing a faith filled with hope and joy is the best catechesis.

  3. Incorporate dynamic and creative activities : Music, cinema, theater, sports or volunteering are effective channels to transmit Christian values and strengthen the community.

  4. Encourage living witness : Invite committed young people and contemporary saints as inspiring models.

  5. Promote the personal experience of God : Facilitate moments of prayer, retreats or worship so that the young person can have a real encounter with God.

Attractive proposals for young people to grow in faith

Youth ministry offers many resources that have proven effective in engaging young people:

  • Parish youth groups that combine dialogue, training, prayer, and service, creating strong and lasting bonds.

  • Catholic digital resources that include podcasts, videos, and apps with youth-friendly content, blending faith and technology.

  • Camps and get-togethers with activities that balance spiritual formation and fun.

  • Social volunteer projects where they can experience God’s love in action and feel like agents of change in society.

Faith is a royal and beautiful path for young people.

It is absolutely possible for young people to believe and grow in faith. They only need to be accompanied by love, listened to patiently, and motivated with proposals that speak their language and respond to their concerns. The Church and the family must be that welcoming place where young people discover that God is a faithful friend, that their life has full meaning, and that faith is the most authentic path to true happiness.

As Pope Francis reminds us:  “Young people are not the future, but the present of the Church. We must walk with them, not ahead or behind.”
