World Grandparents Day: Plenary Indulgence

July 28, a Special Day

The IV World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, instituted by Pope Francis, will be celebrated on July 28, 2024, under the motto “In old age, do not abandon me.” On this occasion, the Apostolic Penitentiary has granted the Plenary Indulgence to grandparents, the elderly, and all the faithful who participate in the celebrations of this day with a true spirit of penitence and charity.

Conditions for Indulgence

The Plenary Indulgence will be granted to those who, fulfilling the usual conditions of sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer according to the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, participate in the various religious services that will be celebrated throughout the world. This decree, signed by the Major Penitentiary, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, highlights the importance of active and spiritual participation in this special day.

Scope of Indulgence

Furthermore, the indulgence can be applied as a suffrage for the souls in Purgatory. It also extends to those faithful who on July 28 dedicate time to visiting elderly people in need or in difficulty, such as the sick, lonely, or disabled, thus demonstrating a true spirit of charity.

Inclusion of the Sick and Caregivers

The decree specifies that Plenary Indulgence may also be granted to sick elderly people and their caregivers, as well as to those who, for serious reasons, cannot leave home. These faithful will be able to spiritually join the celebrations of the day, offering their prayers, pains or sufferings to God, especially during the broadcasts of the events through the media.

Call to Priests

To facilitate the obtaining of this divine grace, the Apostolic Penitentiary calls on priests to be available with a generous spirit for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. Priests equipped with the appropriate faculties to hear confessions are asked to offer their service in a special way during this day.

Conclusion

The IV World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly is an opportunity to celebrate and honor our elders, recognizing their value and contribution to society and the Church. The granting of the Plenary Indulgence underlines the importance of this day and the Church’s desire to spiritually support the elderly and those who care for them.
