It is not difficult to fall into the trap of reducing Christmas to a mere family, traditional, or sentimental celebration, or to a memory of a distant event with little to say to your life today.

Therefore, to celebrate Christmas as God commands, the Church proposes that we contemplate the Virgin Mary on this last Sunday of Advent. The Virgin Mary was able to receive Jesus because she was prepared, and we will only be able to obtain Jesus if, like Mary, we are prepared.

How do we prepare? First, with a true desire for Jesus to come; then removing the obstacles in our hearts that prevent the coming of Jesus: sin, pride, arrogance, self-sufficiency, lack of humility, and lack of charity.

It is also important that – amidst the noise of society – we have an attitude of listening to the Word of God, letting it penetrate and act in our heart; and of docility to the Holy Spirit, letting Him guide our life.

The Word of God today teaches us that the humble are those who will find God: And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, little among the clans of Judah, from you, I will bring forth one who is to rule Israel.

For this reason, the Word of God today proposes MARY as an example to us. She is the humble servant of the Lord. She is the one who recognizes that she is small, she is simple and open to God. Mary thus becomes a model for us at the end of Advent: she receives God through her humility, because she accepts Him unconditionally, because she is willing to accept and fulfill His will, because she knows that He is the Lord, and she is the servant, He is the Master and she is the disciple. This is how Jesus Christ lived it and this is how all of his disciples are to live it: When Christ came into the world, he said: … Here I am, to do, O God, your will.

Take heart! Do not let Christmas be stolen from you! Because Emmanuel is coming, “God with us.” The Lord wants to enter your heart. Open it wide! Let yourself be filled by Him! Do not resist Him! You will find the peace, joy and happiness that only the Lord can give you!

You, too, will hear the words proclaimed by Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit: Blessed is she who believed, because what the Lord said to her will be fulfilled.

Is your heart ready for CHRISTMAS? How is your heart? Are you ready to receive the Lord who is coming? Is your heart free from all obstacles? Do you want Jesus to be in your heart and fill it?

Have a simple and humble heart like Mary’s and prepare to receive the Lord! You will find the peace, joy and happiness that only the Lord can give you! He wants to enter your heart. Open it wide! Let yourself be filled by Him!

Come, Holy Spirit!
